$50m in bonds to be put on ballot for new SPD station

City commissioners approve $50 million in bonds to be put on ballot for new SPD station
SARASOTA -- Voters in March will be asked to allow the city to issue up to $50 million in bonds to pay for a new, 87,000-square-foot police headquarters.

At Monday night's meeting, the City Commission approved putting the bond measure to a vote. If the measure is approved by voters on March 13, residents' annual tax bills could rise $60.66 for a home valued at $200,000.

In total, the new police station could cost nearly $44 million. Officers say the current station on Ringling Boulevard is old and cramped and has roof and plumbing problems.

The city has spent five years looking for a site for the station. The commissioners recently approved a $2.35 million contract to buy a property at 150 S. East Ave.

A new station has been needed for a long time. The city has waited so long the price has gone sky high!

This bond and building should be voted down, lets start the consoldiation of the city and county now. The city PD uses about 60% of the cities budget. STOP it already
