Red Headed Step Children of the S.O.

Well the rumor is Qualified Detention personel will no longer be allowed to apply for Law Enforcement. Quit your job and go through a full time academy with 19 year old zit poppers who will dump in their pants the first real call they go to is your only option. Why not just get some trained monkies from the zoo! This is a disgrace to all duel certified Deputies who work hard for this agency. The Sheriff said he needs more Deputies on the street, especially in the comming years-what are we. Passing Detention over shows things have not really changed all that much since Uncle homer left!

Am I reading and understanding your post correctly?

If you work in Detention for HCSO and are Dual-Certified you cannot request a transfer to Patrol unless you resign and re-apply?

If that is what you are saying then that is REALLY stupid and, as you said, a smack in the face to hard working Deputies.

    One of the red heads.......

    Correct
The rumor and I stress rumor at this point is Duel Certified Deputies will no longer will be allowed to apply for the road as in the past. You would have to resign, then go through a full time academy, then re-apply. Now who is going to be able to afford to do that. Those of us that are vested are not going to do that. Maybe the Sheriff should take his right hand man and go out to L.A. That department certifies all full time Deputies in both Corrections and Law Enforcement. You have to work both the jails and the street before choosing one for the rest of your career. I bet those Deputies are not as cynical towards each other-they have been in each other shoes! Gee could learn something from that! Don't be surprised if your ranks start to swell with ex-HCSO Deps that are not going to be treated like second class citizens..........

    The REAL Problem

Your REAL problem is that you just want to complain.

    1. If you are dual (note, dual - not duel) certified why haven't you applied for the road long before now?

    2. As short-staffed as the Detention side is, it is understandable that management doesn't want to drain an area which needs people to provide more people in an area (LEO) where there is a long line of qualified applicants.

    3. You made your grumbling post based on a RUMOR? If you want some FACTS - Ask The Sheriff! Send a memo! Apply and see if you get accepted or turned down! Do something other than just advancing a RUMOR!

    I want to clarify.

Are you saying that they will not allow Dual-Certified Deputies to request a transfer or are you saying that they will no longer allow Corr. Only Deputies to request to attend the academy on a sponsored basis?

If you are Dual-Certified and they will not let you transfer, thats stupid. If they simply are now saying that they won't pay your way thru the academy then thats not as big of a thing. There are lots of LE Certified folks looking for work. Its fiscally irresponsible to sponser an LE academy unless you have to.

    The Real Answer

No, it's not stupid to decline to allow a person to transfer from a severely understaffed area to an area which is pretty much fully staffed, and where there are hundreds of people waiting in line for the few vacancies that do exist.

To permit the transfer would be detrimental to the understaffed area and of no particular benefit to the fully staffed area.

IF the severely understaffed area could be filled to at least the slightly understaffed level, then transfers should be considered.

How to increase the staffing? Clearly there are undesirable elements of the Detention job. The most obvious first step would be significant increases in pay. If you can't get applicants for a job at a particular pay level the pay must be too low. Economics suggests that you should raise the pay until you reach a level where you can attract good applicants.

There are probably other perks and changes to working conditions that would also be helpful, but increasing the pay scale is the most important.
