Lawmakers ultimately approved a $72-million increase in the DOC budget that included $26.1 million to shorten guards’ shifts from 12 to 8.5-hours to alleviate DOC’s turnover rate – 42% of new employees left after one year, 57% after two.

The DOC Friday said “measures implemented to address staffing” include:

“Continuing transitioning … from 12-hour to 8.5-hour shifts … ;”

Offering $1,000 hiring bonuses with 10% or more staff vacancy rate;

Offering $1,000 hiring bonus for returning certified staff;

Increasing pay to $33,500 for (non-certified) correctional officer trainees;

Hiring part-time certified correctional officers;

Consolidating work camps, annexes into main institutions.
