    Take home car

How does the take home vehicle work? Any restrictions on it based on where you live?

20 miles from the station. If you live outside that area then you can park at a fire or police station and drive your personal vehicle the rest of the way. You get a vehicle once you are released from FTO.

Why can't a new hire be issued a car and take it home while in training?

Although officers in field training are fully certified and sworn, it's just not prudent for the agency to allow brand new officers to operate fully marked patrol cars without the supervision of their FTO. The agency could be held liable for negligent training or negligent supervision if that officer were to get into a use of force (protective action) on their way home without the guidance of their FTO. It's just not worth it. FTO is only a few months. You have a 25-30 year career to drive your marked car home.

You’re right, lord knows Lakeland Police Department doesn’t need any more bad publicity.

Why would you want to work for the horrible pay at either of the premier agencies in Polk? Go somewhere you can live financially comfortable at.

Law enforcement is not the place to be anymore and especially if you’re doing it broke. You’d have to be an idiot to enter this profession anymore. This jobs for suckers and morons.

If you don’t heed all of the warnings or are too stupid to listen to anyone that’s already done it, at least go somewhere you will be compensated...TPD, HCSO, Federal... that’s pretty much it in Central Florida.

Lastly, the take home car will be exciting for about a whole day. Look at me, look at me, I got a cheap tin badge and a pistol attitude goes away fast. I assure you this is true. Just wait until people discard trash, feces, drug paraphernalia or worse in to your front yard. Not to forget the annoying neighbors that will constantly ask for your advice or think that you can fix their problems off duty. Most of all, the safety of your family will be something on your mind constantly every time you go X8.

    Good luck sucker.

Let me get this straight. The Officer has full arrest authority, is recognized by the State as active, is issued a FIREARM, but can't drive a car home? Does a new hire have to leave their handgun at the station or give it to their trainer at the end of each shift? Something's amiss here. An elected Sheriff (Judd) issues cars upon the classroom portion of training being complete to new hires. If anyone would have worries about negligence, seems it would be someone who depends on votes to keep their job. Don't trainees get use of force training by the agency before they go on the road?

That’s because this agency has suffered from corruption and can’t afford to make anymore mistakes. The marked vehicle represents their image and giving that to someone that hasn’t proven themselves is a liability to that image. It’s all about image and what things appear to be, not the truth. Ethics are taught in every academy, yet these ethics are rarely applied when nobody is around to hold them accountable.
