The public demands three strong character-traits in an elected sheriff:

1. Integrity: Trust must be earned, but it is easier to lose - forever.
   .
2. Competence: A conceited attitude is no substitute for competence.
   .
3. Humility: A true leader inspires subordinates by his actions towards them, but a bean counting manager is condescending to anyone who approaches him.

When integrity, competence or humility is missing, then a three-legged leadership-stool cannot stand.

Candidate Kurt Hoffman:

• Has never worked as a beat cop.
• Has never owned nor operated a private business.
• Has never made money from a non-governmental job.
• Has a documented record of:
  (a) Stealing from taxpayers (stole gas from CCSO and stole items from Charlotte Mosquito Control)
  (b) Stealing from citizens (stole a boat from a citizen)
  (c) Stealing from a private business (stole pornography from a retail outlet).
• Then he failed a lie detector test when he was questioned about these things. He did not tell the truth until after he was caught lying.

Candidate Paul Fern:

• Has worked as a Sarasota County beat cop and recently retired with a pension.
• Has worked as a federal law enforcement officer.
• Has owned and operated successful businesses (plural).
• Has made money without using taxpayer dollars. Much like President Trump, Paul Fern has a successful track record with running profitable businesses, but he has no experience as a paid-politician. Who would you rather have in charge of your checkbook-of-tax dollars?

Facts speak louder than political promises.

The battle for Sarasota County’s top law enforcement job comes down to two candidates with plenty of law enforcement experience, but little exposure to the public. Retired Sarasota deputy Paul Fern and Col. Kurt Hoffman will face off in a universal election on August 18 for the position of Sarasota County Sheriff.

Hoffman says his fundraising efforts have paid off because he raised $114,585. “I get up in the morning and I message people [on social media]. I read posts.”

Fern says he is going door-to-door to talk to people. He has raised $16,266. “I haven’t taken one dime from big land developers. My opponent is funded by big developers and real estate.”

This is where the general public is misled. Either Kurt lied again or the reporter screwed up but it doesn't really matter. I read the article and the story reads, "Hoffman has worked for two Sarasota County sheriffs since 2005. He also worked as a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1989 to 1997, and a reserve officer while getting his law degree. He is an attorney and a former prosecutor." Well he never really worked as a deputy, just a reserve deputy. Big difference in my book. And isn't that when he stole gas for his personal vehicle from the Charlotte Sheriff's fuel depot? Beside he only got to wear his uniform to pad his retirement just like Electra did. Neither of those 2 were ever cops, just lawyers that got special dispensation.

While the candidate with integrity was reported as, "Fern started his law enforcement career as a corrections deputy for the Manatee County Sheriff’s office in 1995, and served in patrol as a Sarasota County deputy from 1997-2002. He left to become an air marshal with the Department of Homeland Security after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks." I had worked with Paul and he knows what it's like being in the trenches.

Hoffman then is quoted, “I’ll let my documented education and experience as a 30-year career law enforcement professional and assistant state attorney speak for itself,” he said. “Personal attacks are for people who have no real message.” 30 year career law enforcement professional? Give me a break. He was never a real cop and for that matter, I know people that were at the SAO when he was there and he was no good there either.

I'll be voting for Paul on the 18th as will my wife.

Here is what upsets Sarasota deputies:

Since 3/14/2005, Kurt Hoffman has never worked in law enforcement at the Sarasota Sheriff's Office. Instead, he was hired as a non-sworn (civilian) attorney, for the sole purpose of working in an office to advise the sheriff on legal matters. However, for pay purposes, Hoffman was sworn in on 3/14/2005, which essentially doubles his retirement pay. From that day until now, he has not done any police work. He has only:

• Worked in an office.
• Sat in a classroom.
• Qualified with a pistol at a range, to allow him to be classified as "high-risk."

For 15 years, Hoffman has worn a uniform, a badge and carried a gun for his office work. It upsets deputies that Hoffman has claimed 15 years of office work as high-risk police work. Therein lies the rub. It's about integrity. By swearing Hoffman in, he is now classified as a "high-risk" worker. It's a legal term that increases retirement benefits for "high-risk" workers in law enforcement and firefighting, where employees are required to:

• Work in "high-risk" situations.
• Work in the field.
• Work in all weather conditions.
• Work around the clock.
• Etc.

Hoffman may be able to fool the public when he wears the uniform, but he is unable to fool law enforcement officers.

Hoffman told the reporter, "Personal attacks are for people who have no real message."

Is Greg Martin's newspaper article a personal attack against Hoffman? Or is Martin's article demonstrative evidence of a lack of character on Hoffman's part? As as investigator, you must draw your own conclusions. Pointing out Hoffman's failed lie detector test is simply pointing out a fact, but it is not a personal attack. Hoffman is unable to provide an explanation for his lying. Otherwise, he would have done so.
