The DOJ is now doing ride-alongs with officers in different districts. I wonder what the officers are going to tell DOJ? Are the officers going to sugar coat bike stops or are they going to tell the truth about the unofficial "performance standard". The admin wants bike stops, tickets, arrests, and street checks. Most agencies have a stat tracking system, but only TPD utilizes a ratio. Nothing you do during the day matters unless it results in an arrest, ticket, or a warning. It is entertaining to see how scared some administrators have become. They mandate officers to do bicycle stops since the numbers are way down. The news paper article should have exposed the real issue. Squeezing the same orange for numbers will eventually make it dry, yet the performance standard mandates arrests, tickets, and warnings. At least Jane made the right decision and made warnings count in the productivity ratio. Prior to that, about the time of the article, the productivity ratio consisted of arrests and tickets only.
