Target: FBI Director James Comey
Goal: Praise the successful recovery of nearly 3,600 children from trafficking and slavery in the U.S.

In a recent FBI sex-trafficking sting, 168 children were rescued and 281 alleged pimps were arrested nationwide. The sting took place over a week, in 106 cities, with nearly 400 law enforcement agencies in the United States and with the involvement of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The latest operation—Operation Cross Country VIII—was the eighth of its kind. Altogether, these operations have yielded astonishing results, such as the recovery of nearly 3,600 children and 1,450 convictions of child abusers over the past 11 years. Along with the impressive success rates of rescues and convictions are the $3.1 million in assets recovered by the FBI in the course of the stings.

Many of the recovered children were previously part of the child welfare system. Often, their disappearances are not reported, making them far more difficult to find. In fact, only two states require child welfare agencies to report missing children in their care. Officials at the FBI said the children are given therapy and medical attention after their rescue.

Applaud the efforts of all those involved and congratulate James Comey, Director of the FBI, on the operation’s success.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Comey,

The success of Operation Cross Country VIII and operations like it inspire hope for the rescuing of America’s at-danger youth. It also stands as a reminder of how much more there is to accomplish and just how large a problem the trafficking and sex slavery of children is in our country and around the world.

Over the past 11 years, nearly 3,600 children have been recovered and saved from inconceivable nightmares, and 1,450 convictions have been reached against those who would continue to abuse our children. As you know, since many states do not require child welfare agencies to report children missing from their care, the task of finding them when they do fall prey to traffickers is even more difficult.

I applaud the involvement of the many organizations responsible for these impressive accomplishments, including the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. I commend your organization for its dedication to saving children from such a nightmarish existence and giving hope to their recovery.

Sincerely,
