Brown: A senseless killing, but no outrage

As I write this, one of the suspects, age 19, has been arrested, and the police are searching for a second. Still, I’m outraged that there isn’t more outrage over the senseless murder of a man who was a role model and, by all accounts, a pillar of his community.

I think I know the reason. These are local thugs, bred in the very community where Lassiter, 53, lived as a youngster and returned to after retiring from the military. No George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin, to blame here. There’s a reluctance to confront the enemy when it is us, even when it’s a matter of life and death.
Recent meetings with law enforcement officials have focused on how residents are disrespected, and I’m sure there are some legitimate complaints. But what’s more disrespectful, getting robbed, beaten and shot by some hood, or impolite treatment by a police officer?
