During the past few months, we have seen agencies
move to privatization of their sworn positions. They take a
sworn gun-toting position out of the field and replace that
sworn officer with a civilian. They do this while swearing
they have not reduced the “boots on the ground” number!
I’d love to tell you just what I call that—but they won’t let
me. What I will tell you is that they are not fooling anyone.
Their plan has been uncovered. I don’t think we will have to
deal with that bunch in two more years anyway. The
positions they hold are about like a Baptist preacher—soon
to be replaced.
Ten Hour Shifts—Oh My! I am glad the results are in
and the fat lady has sung. I stand by our decision to give you
a choice in the hours you work each shift. A major part of
my job as your SLEO Chapter President is to listen to the
membership. So far, I have been involved with the Ag.
Officers’ permanent shift issue and the FWC ten hour shifts
decision. I believe in allowing people the opportunity to
voice their opinions, and they did! The FWC vote was
nearly split down the middle. I would not be surprised to
hear the idea come back up. I do believe FWC command
staff supports the ten hour shifts. I support whatever our
membership chooses.
Off-duty Vehicle Insurance issue. It seems like this
issue surfaces about every five years. The problem is
finding collision insurance for the state vehicles while
working off-duty. I thought I had found a carrier in Star and
Shield Insurance. Now I’m being told that it’s more
complicated than first thought. The good news is we are
currently meeting with agencies and trying to develop a
system that will cover our membership with collision
insurance while working off duty jobs. We may be able to
supply this coverage for less than TEN dollars a year! I will
keep you posted.
We will begin negotiations next month. Our entire
contract will be open for negotiating with DMS. If you have
specific ideas that you would like to see looked at, please let
me know soon. I have learned over the years that the best
ideas seem to always come from the field. Please take a
minute and read through your contract. A link is provided at
our PBA website. It’s YOUR contract. Make suggestions,
share your ideas.
Lastly, make sure the PBA has your current contact
information on file. Sign up for the E-PBA today. Is your
PBA bulletin board in your office up to date? Take a
moment and sign up some of our new officers. If you need
some applications let me know.
