SHERIFF: Broward deputy's Facebook comments cross the line

SHERIFF: Broward deputy's Facebook comments cross the line

    From CBS12.com

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Broward County Sheriff's officials are promising an investigation into controversial comments made by one of their deputies on the CBS 12 Facebook page.

It began when we posted breaking news on our CBS 12 Facebook page about West Palm Beach motorcycle officer, Keith Gorski, who was hit by a car on Nov. 23.

Gorski remains in the hospital in a medically induced coma after being struck at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Embassy Drive in West Palm Beach Wednesday. But the comments that followed from a Broward County Sheriff's deputy have prompted an internal investigation.

On our CBS 12 Facebook wall Jesus Manuel Perez wrote posts about Officer Gorski who had just been injured. Perez essentially says maybe the officer was trying to mess up someone's day giving them a ticket.. and quote.. "karma got to him real fast."

That post elicited several responses, including one from Broward Deputy Craig Jacobson who wrote "Hey Jesus. Go back to the taco shop where u came from before u see your name sake."

Another person then responded, "yes the original poster is a dummy but "no need to get racial."

Jacobson replied, "If I was going to get racial I would have said something like isn't it low tide, doesn't he have some relatives to pick up."

"We're not going to tolerate that," said Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti.

Sheriff Lamberti says everyone has the right of free speech. But as a deputy?

"That crosses the line. I mean you cannot do that knowing you're a representative of the Broward Sheriff's Office. It's horrendous. It offends me greatly," said Lamberti.

Jacobson's Facebook picture shows him in uniform. He indicated on his personal page, which has since been made "unavailable," that he is a Broward deputy and a former NYPD cop, a fact noted by a poster on the CBS 12 Facebook page. As of Tuesday, he had deleted some of the photos of him in his BSO uniform, removed his work history with BSO and changed his profile picture to him in his high-school football referee uniform.

"Broward County is the most diverse county in the state of Florida," said Lamberti.

Sheriff Lamberti says an internal investigation of Jacobson and his comments is already under way.

CBS 12 stopped at Jacobson's Boca Raton-area home. A cruiser was in the driveway but no one came to the door.

"You can't defend the indefensible. And we're not going to defend it, we're going to investigate it," said Lamberti.

Sheriff Lamberti says internal policies already govern Jacobson's behavior. But the department is in the process of establishing a social media policy for employees.

LOL. You can't teach common sense.

The BSO investigation will focus on who he is supporting for sheriff next year. If the deputy is for Israel, which based on the concensus, he will be fired. Better get a PLEA attorney.

Hey Craig, not the smartest thing to do leaving your identity for them to see. They are going to show you the door now. They are going to take everything from the past including talking to your first grade teacher and fire you. Get set for this bogus crap investigation. Your case will take way less time than Benjamin's case.

I fail to see what the big deal is here unless he identified himself with the post as a BSO employee. Some people dislike latinos but at least most latinos dig the hell out of each other and must be protected from insult. On the other hand, the Sheriff made a TV statement that a non-convicted suspect was probably sharing his kiddie porn with other PERVERTS. Most people do not like perverts but other perverts are glad they're around. So was it OK to make this statement on public television? I may be one of the many offended perverts. Name calling is not OK Al. Live by your own rules.

How do you pick your targets here? By public opinion? More campaigning for votes I would guess. Things that are said and laughed about behind closed doors or emailed as jokes. That's OK. And please don't ever consider saying nothing - just continue to slam your own employees.

Freedom of speech pure and simple .

The kiddie porn guy had 50,000 photos of naked little girls and you don't think the sheriff should call him a pervert? He should have called him a f***ing POS pervert! If you're an offended pervert, so be it.

As for Craig, he's a nice guy, but what a dumb thing to do. He made ethnic cracks on a MEDIA website with his name and photo in uniform appearing. He's not going to suffer too much for it but he needs to expect a hard slap on the wrist.

Major, Lt, Sgt and multiple detectives didn't get fired for making gay jokes about another BSO employee through BSO email. How can they fire him for posting on a non-BSO site?

You're joking right? BSO does not give two sheets about gay bashing. I think it's even encouraged! I saw where a BSO employee called the police (BSO) when a mob of his neighbors decided to hurl gay slurs at the employee and what did BSO do? They sided with the neighbor! True story! The complainant was a BSO employee and the deputy gerrymandered the report to reflect the neighbor as the complainant and incident location! To make matters worse, the foul mouthed neighbors admitted in sworn testimony that they were the ones who initiated the homophobic conversation in an internal affairs investigation but the employee wound up with a written reprimand.

The same employee was accused of something else (a felony charge) after that and served an 8 month suspension (paid) and he did absolutely nothing wrong. Charges were unfounded, but during his suspension he was sought out by two deputies in the neighborhood where he lives and was given two moving violation citations which were also found to be a crock and were thrown out at trial.

Spare me the BSO cares crap.

READ THIS FAST. IT'S ALL TRUE SO I'M SURE THE MOD WILL DELETE IT WITHIN HOURS!
