Two Volusia Deputies shot in domestic call Saturday, but still make arrest

    From Examiner.com

Two Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputies were shot after an early-morning domestic call Saturday in DeBary, but they still managed to arrest the man who allegedly shot them. Sheriff’s spokesperson Gary Davidson says Deputy John Braman was flown to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach by the Sheriff’s helicopter Air One, after he was shot three times – in the right shoulder, left arm, and one bullet grazed his neck. A bullet also grazed Deputy John Brady’s right shoulder, and he was taken to Halifax Hospital in Daytona by EVAC ambulance. Officer Davidson says the injuries were not life-threatening, though Deputy Brady’s injuries were initially assessed as serious.

The incident started shortly before five Saturday morning, when it was reported to the Sheriff’s Department that a man had allegedly tried to strangle his ex-girlfriend in DeBary. The two deputies responded to the man’s house on Huntington Street in Deltona, and were taking 27-year old Cory Reynolds into custody when a struggle broke out. Officer Davidson says that during the struggle, “…Reynolds produced a handgun and shot both deputies.” He adds that the deputies did not return fire, and “…despite their injuries…were able to take Reynolds into custody.” Reynolds was not injured in the incident.

    Additional details

In an updated news release from Officer Davidson with additional details about the shooting, he reports that Reynolds “…pulled away from the deputies in an effort to prevent them from handcuffing him. Deputy Braman was able to pull Reynolds to the ground in the front yard of the home and then laid on top of Reynolds as he attempted to get him under control and handcuff him. Deputy Brady also tried to assist in securing Reynolds, and that’s when the shooting took place. Deputy Braman was still on top of Reynolds when other responding deputies arrived moments after the shooting. Reynolds’ pistol was recovered on the sidewalk leading up to the front door of the house.”

The Sheriff’s Department also says Deputy Brady was treated and released from Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach Saturday morning. Deputy Braman was still being treated mid-morning, but was said to be conscious and alert.

Officer Davidson also reported that 27-year old Cory Reynolds was charged with one felony battery charge and two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
