    NEW PORT RICHEY --

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has returned more than $1.5 million to the county, largely a result of a change in pension contributions, Sheriff Chris Nocco announced today.

The money includes $67,044 in collected revenue and $1.47 million in unspent budgetary appropriations from the fiscal 2011 budget. The money is required to be turned over to the county commission.

The revenue came from fees for court access, sales of recycled pallets and cardboard, and a vehicle fee charged for extra-duty assignments, the sheriff's office said.

Roughly 75 percent of the unspent money was the result of a new state law that requires state employees to contribute 3 percent of their pay to their pensions. The law, which took effect July 1, was passed to offset a statewide budget shortfall.

The remainder of the unspent money came from lower-than-projected fuel costs, non-renewed or lower-cost maintenance agreements, decreased food and supply costs in the jail, and lower inmate medical costs.

In September, county commissioners approved Nocco's $83.3 million budget request for fiscal 2012. The budget is roughly $3 million lower than the fiscal 2011 budget Nocco inherited from retired Sheriff Bob White.

Still, Nocco planned to hire three analysts, eight jail nurses, two sergeants and 10 detectives in an attempt to combat the county's prescription pill epidemic.
