MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - A Martin County Sheriff's deputy discovered more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana just by following routine procedure.

The deputy was patrolling Indiantown Tuesday night when he came upon a man standing near a cargo van on Warfield Boulevard.

The man said his vehicle had a mechanical breakdown and he was going to go for help. Then he left.

Because the van was parked on the road, and the weather was bad, the deputy was concerned it might be a traffic hazard.

Following standard practice the deputy called for a tow truck to move the vehicle. While making an inventory of the van's contents twelve boxes of cannabis were discovered, according to the sheriff's office. The marijuana weighed 1,100 pounds and has an estimated street value of $1,110,000, according to the sheriff's office.

The van was leased but not by the man who was discovered near the vehicle.

So far, deputies have not made any arrests. Anyone with information is urged to call Sgt. John Budensiek at 772 220-7160.
