Greenacres — A Greenacres police officer has been fired for taking money from passengers during traffic stops earlier this year.

In two separate complaints filed on April 15, people accused Officer Michael McCabe of taking $500 and $700 off passengers during traffic stops, Greenacres Police spokesman Capt. Michael Porath said Tuesday.

The complaints prompted an Internal Affairs Investigation, during which McCabe was put on administrative leave. McCabe had been with the department for three years and had previously worked for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and a department in the northeast, Porath said.

After the investigation concluded, McCabe was fired Aug. 21.

A separate criminal investigation was conducted by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, according to Greenacres police. Those findings were not available this morning.

he was a bad apple to begin with . . .

but this brings up a point. Be carefull out there, our IA dept has set up false calls in order to try and catch deputies while doing something wrong. They have even sat across the street from a bar to watch a deputy. Always assume you are being videotaped - that way you will always know you are not doing anything improper.

He only worked with us for a short while and was terminated for falsifying his application. Apparently he had issues with his other department that he failed to tell us about. Remember, things do eventually catch up to you....Always be truthful and never lose your integrity. If you lose your integrity, then you should find another profession.

OUR IA DEPT WOULD NEVER SET UP FALSE CALLS TO TRY TO CATCH ANYONE. THIS IS OUTLANDISH AND WREAKS OF IMPROPRIETY AND ENTRAPMENT. NEXT YOU'LL BE SAYING THEY USE YOUR CADS TO SEE WHAT CALLS YOU WERE ON AND RECRUITING THOSE PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A BAITED SCHEME. THIS IS AS IF THEY WERE TRYING TO SEE A PATTERN BY INTERVIEWING PEOPLE FROM THOSE CALLS BEHIND YOUR BACK. IA DOESNT DO THAT. STOP LYING.

I would certainly HOPE IA had better things to do than try to set somoene up as proposed in an earlier posting. Calling in a false call would be a crime anyway. Who would do the IA on IA ?????

It doesn't really matter if IA does this or not... cops are suppossed to be upstanding people. If you are a cop who takes money from a person; criminal or IA personell, then you deserve, and should, get your butt fired immediately.

So, regardless if IA is sending out people to try to "entrap" officers, as you would call it, the officer shouldn't be a crook.

Honestly, I really don't understand some people's thought process. It reminds me of a girl I arrested the other day... her boyfriend is a burglar in jail. She said he didn't do anything wrong because the victims left their doors unlocked. She actually believes that since they didn't lock their doors, it was their fault. The person here screaming entrapment must think the same way.

That burglar should have never been attempting to see if the doors of the home were unlocked or not; he had no business being there. Just like the Greenacres cop had no business taking money that didn't belong to him. It doesn't matter if it is an IA test or not... why would a cop even consider it? If you don't make enought money as a cop, there are a million jobs out there that pay far more. Find one and leave the corruption out of our ranks.

How about this just do your job don't worry about IA unless you are a crook.. many cops have stolen things or not responded to calls when dispatched.. so if IA gets a complaint it is their job to do a proper investigation.. so just do your job and stop worrying about it if you are an honest hard working cop!
