Deputy mayor Goliath Davis snubs police funeral
ST. PETERSBURG — As the city's top officials came to mourn another slain police officer on Tuesday, the whereabouts of a former police chief invited to the funeral was once again a mystery.
Goliath Davis, the city's senior administrator of community enrichment, wasn't spotted at the service or at a VIP reception before the funeral of David S. Crawford, who was killed last week. The apparent absence was notable because Davis, who served as police chief from 1997 to 2001, also wasn't seen at last month's funeral for Sgt. Thomas J. Baitinger and Officer Jeffrey A. Yaslowitz, who were killed Jan. 24.
Davis' apparent absence became grist for Tampa shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge Clem after Davis was later spotted at the funeral for Hydra Lacy Jr., the fugitive who killed Baitinger and Yaslowitz. Clem said his absence was disrespectful to the officers.
Davis wouldn't confirm or deny that he attended the officers' funeral last month. He wouldn't return phone calls Tuesday asking whether he attended Crawford's funeral. Last month, he pointed out that he did attend the visitation of the two fallen officers and paid respects to their wives. On Monday, Davis attended Crawford's wake, which should cut him some slack, said City Council member Karl Nurse.
"But I can't explain the logic of why he would not go (to the funeral), particularly after last time," Nurse said. "I don't know how police officers feel anything but insulted."
Council member Steve Kornell and state Rep. Darryl Rouson said they didn't consider it a big deal. "We all grieve in different ways," Rouson said.

Shameful Goliath Davis conduct
Response to the post that "You can't have it both ways"
You DO realize this forum is an exchange of a variety of opinions and the comments originate from many people. This is NOT one voice from one person and we don't share the same one opinion. Geez!!
So here's my 2 cents: it's shameful that a former chief of police who was in law enforcement 25 years doesn't have the respect to attend the funerals of police officers murdered in the line of duty. Regardless of whether Davis liked them as people or respected their work ethic is irrelevant. They were protecting the citizens of the city in which the deputy mayor was born, resides and continues to draw a paycheck. That deserves a dignified response through his mere attendance.
Davis was not obligated to make a speech on behalf of how wonderful they were or how they made the ultimate sacrifice. Others who knew them did that. All Deputy mayor Davis had to do was show up. And he did not.

Re: GO STAY AWAY
Retired Police Member hit the nail on the head. Goliath Davis was the Chief of SPPD Police at one time. Whether or not his appearance was wanted or not at the funerals doesn't matter. The fact that he was a NO SHOW both times...spoke more about him and the current policies he has established within our City. The time has come for him to be removed from his position. He is no longer wanted or needed. He has become an burden.

Deputy mayor no longer effective
It's just this simple: The city's deputy mayor, Goliath Davis, has lost the ability to be effective as a city employee. He is not trusted or respected by the majority of its citizens and is in alignment with a contingent of radicalized individuals on the fringe of society (African People's Socialst Party).
There are earnest people who would do better in his "community enrichment" mission if only Mayor Bill Foster would begin the search.
THE TIME HAS COME

Re: GO STAY AWAY
Goliath Davis is an honorable man with a long distinguished career in public service to the citizens of St. Pete. The attacks against him and the Mayor exemplify the hatred most St. Pete police officers have towards people of color. The racial divisions within our city are a result of decades of mistreatment by bigoted SPPD officers. The racial divide will only continue to get worse until such a time that St. Pete purges the police dept. of bigotry.
