You can try to spin it anyway you want but the facts are the facts.

The difference is we are willing to put ourselves in harms way to save the likes of you. The majority of the time harm comes to the people in your list through tragic accidents. Excluding things like car accidents, harm comes to us through the purposeful actions of others 9 times out of 10.

It was very distasteful seeing officers wearing the "Cpl Roberts was killed so give me a raise t-shirts"

When your dead your dead. I would love to see you give a death notice to a family of an individual who lost their life at work. Would it sound something like this. "I am sorry to inform you that your loved one was killed on the job but consider your self fortunate that they were not a police officer because that would be a real tragedy, have a nice day."

The professions on your list are a result of occupational accidents. Most those deaths were preventable. Show me the top ten list of occupations for "murdered" on the job.

Due to ACCIDENTS you nincompoop. There is no profession in the USA where you're more likely to be murdered on the job than a police officer. But who cares, the city won, we lost. The next year we will see what the repercussions of that will be and how it will change morale. If it doesn't change morale, then you guys got a bargain, if morale goes down the shitter and crime goes up, you and fellow citizens might be wondering why the city spent money on projects like the Riverwalk instead of making good on the promise to the officers.

Officers have brought up some good points, but my argument will be different. First, I agree that it's misleading to compare what we do with the accidental deaths of other workers. I don't see military soldier listed either, but how many people would rather go to Iraq as a soldier or work the projects as a police officer instead of cutting timber or being a truck driver? Exactly, very few!

Now, my argument is all about Life Expectancy. Data in the past has shown that cops can have as much as a 15 year reduction in life expectancy. Other data has shown that cops frequently die within 5 years of retirement. That's a heavy price to pay for having a career in law enforcement. With smarter and more physically fit cops being hired, I'm hoping that the numbers will get better, but for reasons detailed in the links and studies below they will never be even. The upside, if there is one, is that that's normally considered why our police pensions do well...because the cops don't stay alive long enough to milk the pensions dry.

The originator of this String said that "the facts are the facts" and I agree, but please be aware of ALL the facts first and consider them when forming an opinion. We're not asking for any pins or medals, but it's very frustrating when people on the outside (non-LEOs) publish opinions as you have done without knowledge of all the facts. I understand that some people just don't get it and never will (like our Tampa City Council except for Joe Caetano), which makes it even more frustrating!

The facts don't get any more real and accurate than this:
