STOP THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE'S ATTACK ON OUR RIGHTS!

The Florida Legislature is currently considering two Joint Resolutions that will place a proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution that will block the major provision of the Employee Free Choice Act. As you may know, the Employee Free Choice Act represents a groundbreaking change to the nation's labor laws that will protect the fundamental rights of all American workers to have a voice on the job through collective bargaining. This proposed amendment will deny Florida's workers the benefits of the Employee Free Choice Act. This amendment is being pushed by Representative Adam Hasner, the House Majority Leader who is a board member for a national effort funded by big business to block the Employee Free Choice Act. This amendment will give Florida corporations the constitutional right to control the process through which workers gain a voice at work. It will give CEO's a free pass to illegally fire, harass and intimidate Florida's workers and keep them from exercising their rights to collectively bargain.

It will also strip firefighters, police officers, teachers and other public employees of their rights under the Public Employee Relations Act and the Public Employee Relations Commission process of voluntary recognition of unions.

    What's At Stake:
Currently, CEO's and corporations get to force workers into company controlled elections to decide whether or not they will have a voice on the job. These so-called "secret ballot" elections are used by companies to draw out the process and give them a chance to fire, intimidate and harass workers to frighten them into giving up their right to collectively bargain in their workplaces. The Employee Free Choice Act will give workers the chance to decide for themselves whether or not they will form a union using an election or the currently allowed process of majority sign-up, whereby workers' signatures on National Labor Relations Board approved cards requesting union representation serve as their vote for a voice at work.

This amendment will also destroy Florida's Public Employee Relations Act and the process through which our public employees gain voluntary recognition for their unions through the Public Employees Relations Commission. This threatens the rights of our teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public servants.

Take action today - contact your Senator and Representative and tell them to VOTE NO on SJR 1908 and HJR 1013, the amendment to deny Florida's of their rights to collectively bargain for better lives for themselves and their families.

This link is to the list of Representatives and their votes on the so called Save Our Secret Ballot that passed the house yesterday. This misleading name is a distraction from the effort to lower our bargaining power for wages, benefits and retirement. Please contact the State Senators in your areas and ask them to vote no on SJR 1908.

The Momentum is Ours! Finally some good news for workers

HJR 1013 and SJR 1908 Update

Thanks to all of your hard work and determination, state legislators decided to forego their anti-worker campaign and focus on the real problems facing Floridians. The “secret ballot” resolutions, HJR 1013 and SJR 1908, died with the end of the legislative session.

This bill wouidl have stripped firefighters, police officers, teachers and other public employees of their rights under the Public Employee Relations Act and the Public Employee Relations Commission process of voluntary recognition of unions.

HJR 1013 passed the House on a party-line vote. Fortunately, it was never taken up in the Senate.

Please take the time to thank the House Democrats who stood up for working families and voted against this disingenuous piece of legislation.

From Cindy Hall, President, Florida AFL-CIO:

Workers in Florida can breathe a sigh of relief this week-- HJR 1013 and SJR 1908, the so-called “secret ballot” resolutions, died with the end of the legislative session. Thanks to your letters, phone calls and meetings with legislators, our elected officials came around and decided to prioritize the real issues facing Floridians, instead of waging a mean-spirited campaign against workers.

Now that the campaign to prevent Florida’s workers from benefiting from the Employee Free Choice Act is officially dead, we are going to focus all of our efforts on passing this bill in Congress.

Florida’s workers have certainly not given up in this fight, and the month of May is going to be full of activities in support of the Employee Free Choice Act. Across the state we will be doing worksite actions with members, events with elected officials, academics and community allies, and still more protests against those corporations who are spending millions of dollars trying to defeat the bill.

    Tom,

Give it up. You will not find support for your liberal, big government policies here. Except maybe from HP or bunny.

    Tom,

Unfortunately you seem to have ignored the problems facing Detroit's automakers over the past few years. Their flawed business models include being handicapped by powerful unions whose members make too much money and receive too many benefits.

Capitalism and the free market is our best way forward. History proves this and during hard economic times its our only way to rebound.

Each worker also has a choice to work at whatever company they'd like in this country. You seem to have forgotten this too.

Re: STOP THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE'S ATTACK ON OUR RIGHTS!

    Dear Tom,
You have written the most ignorant and misleading post I have ever seen on this forum about the proposed Federal legislation. Your statements are outright lies, fabrications, and misleading comments as to the purposes and likely results of the Federal legislation. Your comments serve to "DISENFRANCHISE" your LEO readers and anyone else who would be fooled by your disingenuous, egregious, and feckless comments. The proposed Federal legislation would prevent one of the most basic "rights" given to all workers--the "secret ballot" that PREVENTS intimidation of workers by corrupt union officials and members.

I have a graduate degree in ECONOMICS (with a concentration in Labor Economics), I have taught Labor Economics courses in graduate school, and have been certified as an "expert witness in labor economics" by both district and Federal courts prior to becoming a LEO. Based upon my training, experience, and publications, there is no doubt that the comments you made are FALSE, DISINGENUOUS, DESPICABLE HUBRIS.

Your comments are the same tone as those of all socialists. Be careful what you wish for "comrade!" Your suggestions would REMOVE PROTECTION from workers, NOT AID WORKERS!
