TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The new speaker of the Florida House was able to get $25.5 million in last year's state budget for a Panhandle college where he now is vice president, even though it had only been slated to get $1 million.

Northwest Florida State College got millions as a result of efforts of Rep. Ray Sansom, a Republican who previously headed the House Budget and Policy Council. All told, the amount was the largest given to any community college this year for projects.

It was first reported Friday by the St. Petersburg Times. The paper said the 25-fold increase is documented in a memo it obtained through a public records request.

Sansom was given a $110,000 job at the college last week. Sansom and the college's president denied any improper relationship.
