CHARLOTTE COUNTY - The circumstances surrounding a botched Port Charlotte home invasion this month might seem almost comical, if not for the violence.

Of five well-armed intruders, one died from a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the groin, and another drowned.

A resident was assaulted, but also arrested. His dog was shot dead. Two suspects were caught, including one who was bitten by police dogs and another who claimed he was a victim. One suspect was captured after a two-week manhunt.

It began with the attempted robbery of a home.

But what makes this attack unusual is that two suspects died, rather than two victims.

"Every robbery takes a different turn," Carpenter said.

At least four of the suspects had previous drug charges, records show.

They ran into trouble every step of the way.
