Delray Beach Deputy Police Chief Maj. Tony Strianese was sworn in as chief of police Tuesday at the City Commission Chambers at City Hall.

Surrounded by friends, family and fellow officers, Strianese promised to lead the city's force of 155 sworn officers. Strianese, 48, was the Police Department's second in command. His new job pays $127,000 a year.

Strianese's career has flourished with the Delray Beach Police Department over the course of nearly 20 years. Before that, he served a two-year stint with New York City's Transit Police Department.

Strianese replaces 30-year veteran Larry Schroeder, who retired Monday.
