Jr. SSO law enforcement academy a success

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Junior Law Enforcement Academy showed middle school students the ins and outs of working as a deputy. The program gave seventh-graders the opportunity to perform deputy duties and gain a greater appreciation for the services provided by law enforcement officers.

The program used school resource officers to provide students with firsthand experience in forensics, defensive tactics, polygraph techniques, search and rescue, and traffic enforcement. Off-duty officers from the Sarasota Underwater Recovery Force, SWAT and the mounted patrol also presented demonstrations. Academy director Detective Dewayne Hill said, "The kids have more appreciation for what law enforcement officers do and they had fun." Hill also said: "Most of what the kids learn about law enforcement is on TV or in movies, but it's not realistic. We want to give them a more accurate view of how we do our jobs."

Students were taken on field trips to the jail, courthouse, and the driving range in North Port, where they observed officers maneuver the driving course.
