    SARASOTA COUNTY — Sarasota County Commissioner Paul Mercier says he will not seek re-election.

    Mercier, a 64-year-old Republican, has served two four-year terms on the commission.

    Earlier this year, Mercier filed to run for re-election and was being challenged by Democrat Jono Miller and independent candidate John E. Mullarkey.

    Republican Party chairman Eric Robinson said he expects to have another Republican in the race soon.

    Joe Gruters, a member of the county Planning Board and a Mercier ally, said he is considering running for the position.

    “It is possible,” said Gruters, a Republican who twice ran unsuccessfully for the state Legislature in 1998 and in 2000.
