    Apples and oranges guys

Okay, it seems like we are comparing apples and oranges here. Fire rescue teams work under the "we can save a life and rescue them" mentality like they do when responding to fires, and we love them for that. In reality, most dives are salvage jobs with no urgency and all the pre-requisites for a detailed crime scene approach. So lets not beat each other up here, because one day, your Fire Diver may be your rescuer and vice versa.... Whoo Yaa, Deep sea !

    Just my opinion

Like we are not out there 24/7. Who do you think is out in the streets 24/7 and not in our racks sleeping between calls. How come we beat you to all the fires and traffic crashes? Besides as someone has already pointed out, you are trained for rescue as we are but our primary responsibility is recovery and preservation of evidence of which we have extensive training.

The I saw some nearby jurisdiction Fire Divers make a find, which was very difiicult seeing the vic fell out of his anchored boat in 10 feet of water next to a bridge, they recovered the body, brought it up, along with his fishing gear, after taking off his weather suit because it was too heavy and dumped everything into their boat and brought it to shore. Does anyone see any problem with this.

The other jurisdiction didn't have any LEO divers so the Fire guys were first in and then the SO called our SO requesting the Dive Team. When we arrived the Fire guys had already done the recovery and destroyed all the evidence. Luckily this was an accident. We had a similar drowning a few years earlier that wasn't an accident. Since it was in our jurisdiction it was handled properly.

I can speak from experience after being an EMT, a Fire Chief, and a Law Enforcement Lt. since 1968.

You are not Law Enforcement and are outside the chain. You don't have and will not get the continued training in search and seizure laws and procedures you will need.

As for being better trained. I would venture to say that, especially in Florida, LEO's receive more training in the average year then fire ever thought of having. Sometimes I wonder how we even have time to do our jobs for all the State mandated training.

The first post said that Fire is out 24/7. Not normally. You are on duty 24/7 but most are not out all day. We as LEO's are on the streets 24/7 as one other poster said and we usually show up first.

One thing that I never pulled when I was responding to a fire or medical call as a fireman or EMT (unless in was shots fired or in progress call), was to tell dispatch that I was staging around the corner till the Police arrived just because someone was violent, may have been violent in the past or walked by a violent person once in their lives. When I went to work for the FD or EMS, no one promised me that I would have a police escort every were I went.

As for this followup post by the original poster: "See what I mean. I ask a simple question and I get ragged on. All you cops are the same. You think your the best. Who do you call when you get your azz hurt or need a wash dow because you got your oc on yourself. Big cry babys"

You didn't ask a simple question. If you had and left it at that you would have not been blasted. You had to make it personal. Why do we call you when we get hurt? Because that's your job. Same goes for the wash down. Of course I have never seen us call for a wash down because of OC spray in our area. We carry what we need for that in our cars.

As 8ball said, most water related incidents are recoveries not rescues. By the time the call comes in and you get to the scene and find a place to put the boat in, suit up and get the necessary info its a recovery. In Florida, every death is treated as a Homicide until ruled otherwise. By the way, just who is the person giving you the last scene location and other pertinent info. More than likely a COP.

I don't want to bad mouth either service, both are vital and both have their place in protecting our citizens. But there is no comparison and it pisses me off when a fireman such as the first poster gets the god syndrome.

I was the commander of the Sheriff's Office dive team here for many years. One day one of our local Fire Departments decided they wanted to get into the water rescue business because their jurisdiction was near one of our beaches. So they got a grant to buy the equipment and get dive certified. The Chief decided he was going to be the head of their dive team and paid to have 5 guys sent for dive training. Six weeks later they had 5 trained open water divers that had rescue diving also. So then they ordered all their gear. They ordered all black ops colored gear. When he showed me what they bought I had to laugh. I asked him how many covert dive rescues did they plan on making. He told me that they were equipped so that they could respond to anything. I asked him had he not seen all of the equipment we used for rescue and recovery, and he said yes. I then asked if he knew why all of it was high visibility colored for underwater work. He just looked at me. I informed him that any covert diving would be done by us and not civilians and I hoped none of his men got into trouble on a dive because it would be hard to fine them.

    Re: Fire better then police

As per my review both departments have equal value in our system. Fire Divers can't find an object unless it is tied off with a line and a neon sign pointing to it. Police is for clear bad elements from our city.
