Gov. Charlie Crist and the Cabinet Tuesday named a top Florida Department of Law Enforcement official to head the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Electra Bustle, an FDLE assistant commissioner, will be the first woman to lead the motor-vehicle agency and succeeds Fred ****inson, who is stepping down Monday after serving as director of the department since 1992.

    Bustle starts Tuesday.

"She has the skills and professionalism needed to serve the people of the state of Florida," Crist said in nominating Bustle, who he noted is a fellow Greek-American.

Bustle, an attorney, got to know Crist during his time as Attorney General, when FDLE worked with the Cabinet office on a range of law enforcement-related issues. Bustle helped develop an FDLE database implemented to weed out sex offenders among the thousands of contractors who work for Florida school districts -- an innovation developed in response to the death of Jessica Lunsford, a 9-year-old Homosassa girl abducted and killed in 2005.

"I'm looking forward to hitting the ground running," Bustle said.

    Help Her

She worked for us down here at Sarasota Sheriff's Office and was hired as a Captain having NEVER been a sworn officer. Promoted to Major several months later. Quit, never worked a case, never worked patrol.

We are glad she is now your boss and someone please teach her police work.

So you think she will be good for us or bad for us?

Her new job is not law enforcement. Fred, her predecessor, was never sworn. He was the son of a cabinet member and a failure at being a lawyer in private pratice. We will trade you her for Chris Knight.

    Change

    Ok guys- lets get productive.

What would you like to see new leadership look at:

    Pay?
    Shift Schedule?
    Equipment?
    Vacancies?

And- what are some ideas for improvement?

FHP is lucky to get EB. Everyone I know at FDLE, sworn and nonsworn, speaks highly of her and says she'll be missed. My bet is that she will take FHP higher in 2 years than they went in the last 10.

I worked with Electra Bustle for 7 years at the Sarasota SO. She is a true leader, fair, and extremely smart. The best part is, she will quickly grasp issues and will work hard to make things better for you.
I don't care what anybody says, you don't have to have been a line officer to lead an agency (especially something as diverse as DHSMV). In fact, rarely do people who start as line officers or deputies obtain the level of education, administrative ability, or legal expertise to run a state-level agency. She will have many responsibilities, work through complicated legal issues, and must be influential at a very high level of governement to serve you.
She is qualified, proven and will do it well for you.
I hope to return to Florida some day and get a DL with her name stamped on it.
    Go Electra!
