    Negotiations slow due to delays

    Contract Update:
The city is offering a salary increase of between 7 and 17 percent, depending on rank and seniority, while the police officers' union is asking for between 22 and 34 percent.

Police are quick to point to one water meter reader supervisor who received an 83 percent raise, putting her salary at $69,388.

After the city's salary overhaul, the pay for the two police captains leapfrogged that of Lewis, whose pay is determined by the City Commission.

The captains' yearly wages jumped from $78,978 to $114,175 -- a 45 percent increase -- surpassing Lewis' $100,000 annual salary.

"North Port Police Department should be the highest-paid, best-equipped agency on the west coast of Florida," Commissioner Richard Lockhart said.

If we all stay strong and stick together we will get what we deserve. The good citizens of North Port realize what it means to have an aggressive/professional police department. It is the only way to combat crime and maintain a safe environment. Our Reps are fighting hard and deserve alot of credit. Tom is doing a great job and when it comes down to it we are all responsible for making this happen.
