3 of our brothers contracted COVID-19 and no PBA

PBA is a POS organization. They do not care about corrections except our dues money. Have you heard from them? NO.
Have you seen them in the news? NO
Do you know who your rep is? NO
Have they ever come to your facility? NO

They only take care of the cops and since they look down upon us as something less we don’t get the attention we deserve.
PBA you know PLEA has been around. Many have signed on but many have not. Corrections may not be as important as cops in your estimation but we are a sleeping giant.
Keep ignoring our needs and wants and see what happens.
The leaders at the PBA are truly useless.

Spoke to Davis and he said that Steadman Stahl and the PBA heads are not obligated to do anything so don’t waste your time calling them.

To all Members:

I just sent the below email and attachment to each Police Chief, Director Ramirez, Director Junior and Sheriff Ramsay, notifying them that while we are acutely sensitive to the release of any law enforcement information that is not legally required to be released, that sensitivity must bend to protect the overall safety of all members, who may not otherwise know that someone they have had contact with has tested positive to COVID-19. We took this action only after receiving many calls from concerned members who were not aware if they had potentially been exposed after hearing about someone in their department that has tested positive.

We do not take this position lightly, but we must use a common sense approach, as we know that this pandemic will get worse before it gets better. We take this position as we mourn the loss of BSO Deputy Shannon Bennett, who lost his life yesterday to COVID-19. While we pray he will be the only loss in the local law enforcement community, and the last loss of a law enforcement officer nationwide, we know that will likely not be the case.

Safety must trump privacy in these times, and we know that you, our members, demand that.

The PBA remains available 24/7 for your needs, be they COVID-19 related or something else. Please do not hesitate to contact us as we all navigate this together.

Subject: COVID-19 and HIPAA

To all Chiefs, Director Ramirez, Director Junior and Sheriff Ramsay:

As always, the PBA is very concerned about the health and safety of our members. That is especially true and crucial during this ongoing pandemic. We are also equally serious about protecting the privacy of those same members. Right now, some may perceive a conflict with those two important goals as it relates to identifying our members who tested positive for COVID-19.

Right now, keeping our members safe by advising who has tested positive for CORONA-19 must supersede the privacy of individual members who may not want their identities revealed. Consistent with that, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has directed that revealing the identities of those who have tested positive for COVID-19 would not be a HIPAA violation. That directive is attached. It is for the benefit of law enforcement officers to be aware of those who they may possibly came in contact with, including fellow officers, who have tested positive. This will allow them to better understand when they should self-isolate or themselves be tested.

While our goal is always to maintain officer privacy, these times require a common sense approach to insure that we are being as careful as possible in our interactions, and knowledge of who has tested positive is crucial in that endeavor.

We urge each department to make sure appropriate information is disseminated, including the names of whomever has tested positive, such that we can better maintain the safety and security of everyone.

What a marshmallow letter. The PBA is losing members like crazy because of it’s fear factor to fight.
I could get any inmate to represent us better. We never ever hear from or see Our rep here at the main jail.
