We Have some major pay Issues

We have some serious political issues also. We have a city run by back woods folk that have no idea how to run a city. It is time to put the power in the hands of a city manager.

A starting officer could make more being a garbage man in Northport than the City of Bradenton P.D.....Come on City Hall this is just embarrassing isnt it that you pay your Police Officers below a garbage man...Boss Hogg would be loving this if he was still here.

From the Sarasota Herald today's edition:

North Port garbage service struggling
john.davis@heraldtribune.com

NORTH PORT -- As North Port grows, so grows its budget -- to a record $155 million this year. What's not growing is the unglamorous department that picks up the city's garbage.

The Solid Waste District has 11 job openings, is losing money and is trying to prove it doesn't need to be outsourced.

Next month, minimum pay in the department will go from $19,844 a year to $33,675 annually.

Solid Waste is cutting spending slightly next year, even as its workload grows and the city is getting ready to ask for bids from private companies that want to take over.

North Port has already looked into piggybacking on Sarasota County's contract with garbage giant Waste Management Inc., but couldn't find a way to make it work.

As North Port has grown, Solid Waste's services have shrunk. Last year, the city stopped monthly bulk pickup of items such as couches and bed frames.

The city regularly gets complaints about abandoned goods in front of houses after people move out and miss trash pickups.

The department's problems have been well-publicized, most notably when it missed collecting the garbage for 3,500 houses because too many workers called in sick on the Monday following the Super Bowl.

"That is not going to happen again," said Public Works Director Branford Adumuah, noting an across-the-board pay raise for city workers, including garbage collectors.

Also, 32 out of the department's 35 people are cleared to drive garbage trucks, something that wasn't true in February.

Solid Waste is looking to take on more commercial accounts. Right now it has 190, and an additional 2,500 houses next year, bringing the total to almost 26,000 -- all while paying workers more.

embarrassing ? why is that embarrassing they are working harder than most people I know, they deserve good pay, any labor job is harder than what we all do ,

True, but when you look at liability issues and that we're held to a higher standard than your average garbage man, that should account for something. They do work hard, but so do we. They get a DUI, I'm sure they can probably keep their job. If a police officer gets a DUI or something else, I can almost guarantee they'll be fired and a huge thing will be in the paper. Granted that officer shouldn't of have done that to begin with, but that just goes to show you that this job is one of the few that someone straight out of high school can get and be given a lot of responsibilty and be torn apart for stepping on the wrong shoe. I'm sure that's got to be worth something.
