BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- A man has been shot and killed in East Manatee County, in the 5900 block of 13th Street East.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer, Dave Bristow, at approximately 8:25 tonight, deputies responded to a shooting at 5919 13th St. E., Bradenton. When deputies arrived, they discovered Michael Evans, 22, shot to death in the front yard of the residence.

They found the man lying in the driveway of the house. Deputies said he may have been hit with as many as 12 bullets. The Medical Examiner will have to confirm that at a later time through autopsy.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended in Sarasota shortly after the shooting. He has been identified as Sylvester Smith, 22. Smith will be charged with Homicide, Bristow said.

A deputy was in the neighborhood at the time of the shooting and was able to pursue the suspect, Smith, and caught up to his 1989 Ford Aerostar van just crossing the Sarasota County line. Smith was arrested in the 1300 block of 21st Street, in Sarasota.

Detectives believe Smith showed up at the location of the shooting to see his girlfriend, Shataila Speight, 20, who lived at the residence. Smith saw his girlfriend talking to the victim and proceeded to shoot Evans.

MANATEE - The gunshot-riddled body of 22-year-old Michael Evans lay in the driveway at 5919 13th St. E., covered in a blanket Thursday night, with only his white socks peeking out of the bottom.

Evans was fatally shot multiple times, just before 8:30 p.m., as he visited a friend at the home, officials said.

The suspect, Sylvester Smith, 22, approached the residence of his girlfriend, Shatailia Speight, 20, to find her outside talking to Evans.

Detectives suspect Smith then shot Evans, according to a news release from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

After hearing gunshots, neighbors stepped outside to see a white van leaving the residence at a high rate of speed.

Smith was apprehended at his home shortly after the shooting and was cooperating with the investigation, a detective said. A gun had not been located as of late Thursday. Authorities were searching near Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport for the weapon.

Evans' maroon Ford Expedition remained parked outside the crime-scene tape surrounding the residence.

Family and friends of both the suspect and the victim gathered along 13th Street after the gunfire, name-calling and nearly becoming involved in a physical argument.

Elijah Davis, Evans' cousin, appeared at the scene shortly after the incident, almost suffering an anxiety attack once he realized it was his cousin who had been shot. Law enforcement authorities kept a close eye on Davis, who attempted to cross the crime-scene tape several times.

Evans' mother was said to be playing Bingo when her son was shot. As of 11 p.m., she hadn't arrived on the scene.

Speight's mother, Rachel, arrived home from work to find numerous law enforcement vehicles parked outside her home.

Within minutes, she broke down into a full-out wail, trying to grasp what had occurred outside her home.

Nenay Jackson, 16, heard the gunshots from a few blocks away and came to the residence to find out what was going on.

"This is what you call the ghetto," she said. "It's happening all the time."

Evans was fatally shot multiple times, just before 8:30 p.m., as he visited a friend at the home, officials said.
