View Full Version : Retired PO Moving to FLa

08-07-2006, 05:09 AM
I am a retired NYPD Det. and will be moving to Fla shortly. I have a NY full carry Permit.

Are there any agencies or private vendors that will offer HR218 certification for retired out of state officer who now reside in Fla.

HR218 is still screwed up and no one can figure out how they want it to work or not work. We have a very liberal conceiled weapons law here. With you PO creds...you can get a conceiled weapon permit as a citizen easier than carrying one as a retired cop

Thanks for the reply .. I found info on the permit also.

St Pete College Allstate Center is offering HR218 qualification classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Classes are on their website.

Here is the link that you can cut and paste:

Do not expect to get much cooperation getting hired down here if you are over 55. The agency approaches range from downright hostile making you feel like you are an intruder in their midst, to friendly and placing you in an "eligibility pool" after you pass all of their tests with flying colors. You probably won't get hired! They do not admit to age discrimination, but it is here in full force.

Good luck!

Thanks for the 218 info. On another topic, I'm only 40 and plan on working in L/E again. I am going to start the EOT process this week. Can I be hired with an agency prior to getting the certification.

Some agencies will hire you, and then pay for your EOT or Comparative Compliance, as some call it. Others require you to be Florida certified before you can apply with them. Check with the particular agency that you want to work for. Salaries vary quite a bit. Some start with $31,000 and others will pay you about $50,000 with your experience. Fort Lauderdale PD pays about $55,000 for someone with your experience. The website is:

State agencies tend to pay less, and do not give annual raises.
You can do a google search to find agencies in your area. I wish you luck in your search.

I have been told that NYPD does not provide their retirees with ID cards attesting to their retirement. Is this true? If so you will not be able to comply with the provisions of HR-218, which require both a retired ID card and a certification of firearms qualification to the standard of active officers in the state where you reside.

If it isn't true and you have the ID card, just go to the Jr. College at the link you've already been given and get the firearms qualification. Then you should be covered by HR-218.

I strongly suggest that you do what I have done and ALSO get a Florida resident concealed weapons license. Counting Florida, it is valid in 30 states. Of course, New York (and most of New England) is not a reciprocity state.

On another subject: The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa operates one of the largest jail systems in the state. They are very shorthanded for Detention Deputies, which is a separate certification from Law Enforcement Deputy.

They are so shorthanded that they often hire people and then carry them on the payroll while they go through the Detention Academy, which they also pay for.

It is a very different job from a Law Enforcement position, but does carry the high risk retirement.

The chances of being hired immediately are quite high as a Detention Deputy. They are somewhere between low and quite low as a Law Enforcement Officer.

Good luck.
