Private jail operator offers county a deal on cells
Most local law enforcement officials want to operate their own jails, but it hasn't stopped the Nashville, Tenn., based company from becoming the fifth largest provider of jail cells and beds in America. Only the federal government and four states have more. The Corrections Corporation of America either owns or runs jails with a total of 69,000 beds throughout the country, including facilities in Bay, Citrus and Hernando counties. It is building a 360-bed addition on the Citrus County jail under a new 15-year contract.
