Two officers on paid leave after North Port shooting

NORTH PORT - Two officers with the North Port Police Department are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome on an investigation into Monday night's shooting of an armed man.

According to a NPPD report, the probe will be handled by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. The unidentified man was struck once in the leg and was transported to Venice Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Charges against him are pending.

The incident began a little before 8:30 pm when officers were dispatched to a residence at 2019 Johannesberg Dr. Shortly after arriving at the scene the officers encountered a man who had just exited the house armed with what appeared to be an assault rifle.

The officers asked the man to drop the weapon but he refused. He then pointed the rifle in the direction of the officers, who in fear for their lives, fired at him.

NPPD's Internal Affairs Division will assist SSO with the investigation. The officers involved have not been identified.

Sounds like they need to spend their time off at the firing range.

Since he shot him in the leg, maybe he was "shooting to wound"?
