CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Coral Springs High School was placed on lockdown last Friday after reports of a suspicious person on campus.

Police quickly realized there was no threat and the all-clear was given, but the story took a twist.

It turns out officers didn't immediately have keys to enter the classrooms.

Lori Alhadeff, a school board member whose daughter was killed in last year's Parkland school shooting, is aware of the issue.

"They got access to the box, but when they went inside there were no keys in the box," she said.

The box she's referring to is known as a "Knox Box." It's where first responders can find master keys.

Teachers were reportedly sent text messages to open the doors for police, which is a violation of school policy because an intruder could be on the other side.

"It's a problem because law enforcement needs to respond as quickly as possible to an incident to get onto campus," Alhadeff said.

A Coral Springs police spokeswoman told Local 10 News the lockdown was only precautionary and, had the situation been worse, officers could have easily gone inside the classrooms.

The incident took place one day after a mass shooting at a California school and in the same county where 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018.

“Due to statutory exemptions pertaining to school safety and security, our office is not able to provide information or comment,” Cathleen Brennan, a spokeswoman for Broward County Public Schools, said in a statement.

I hope that school changes ALL of the locks at that school, who knows the intentions of the person that has the master key. That key opens every door in the school.

The loser Parkland parents that went to Israels hearing with running mouths, why aren't any of you making statements on the news about what just occured?

Look, I realize that people are using this to make some kind of political point, but, really?

So, there was no key to open locked classrooms in some Knoxbox at the school. Big deal. One could have been acquired easily from and school administrator, or the janitor. And, as there was no active shooting in progress, there is no reason not to have an administrator accompany any sweeper teams.

What this was was nothing more than a knee-jerk overreaction by the school and LE. A student tells a "security monitor" that she thinks she saw a former student on campus with a "bag" at 0730 hrs. The school administration goes into a complete meltdown and orders a code red alert lockdown, disrupting the entire school day, as well as traffic on surrounding streets, and finally determines that it was most likely a current student, who was innocent of any wrongdoing. So, if all entry is monitored and screened, what is the big deal? Oh, wait, there is no entry screening. Fortunately, this was all a hoax or mis-identification and so was only an annoyance. However, if it had actually been a sighting of an armed individual, intent upon committing mass murder, how many casualties would there be at Taravella before an armed response stop him? Now, students know that they can simply claim to have seen a "suspicious person with a bag" on campus and close down the entire school. Gotta love it when plan come together.

I highly agree with your points. We have become paranoid and pandering as a society that these kids are using it to their advantage. Some kid who probably had a big exam needed time to study and called in a false report. Until the school board makes sweeping changes, another shooting will happen in our own backyard soon.

What are you talking about? You saw all of the action that you are going to see. There is STILL no security at Broward County Schools. Anyone can walk onto the campus. The on-site security response is nonexistent. So, you get an unwarranted school lockdown. Responding CSPD units shut down surrounding streets. A bunch of LEOs get called in to sweep the school because nothing is seen on the "new" state-of-the-art surveillance system. And, these teams are asking teachers if there are any students in the classroom who they do not know? Please. And, now all of these agencies are high-fiving each other and telling the media what a great job they are doing. And, the media can only criticize the fact that thefre was no passkey in a knoxbox? If this was another mass school shooter, how many casualgties would he have racked up before responding LEOs arrived?

Nothing is going to change. Nobody cares and nobody wants to spend the money that it would cost to actually secure the schools.

The fault of inexperienced new leaders. This could have been devistating period. We need to hold them responsible and fire them all. They have had plenty of time to do drill. Who will be fired!! Parkland parents? You seem to think you have the answers so where are you. I'm referring to the ones who used the tragedy of a killer to campaign Israel out but will be re-elected.

Drill? WTH are you talking about? Drills only cover what to do AFTER a shooter is shooting and killing people? Once the perimeter of the campus is breached, by a determined shooter, people are going to be injured and killed? What has to be done, if people are really serious about school security, is to secure the perimeter, allow entry only at specified entry points and screen everyone entering through those points. But, such security is expensive and no one wants to spend the money. So, no security. Hide under your desk of the closet in your classroom.

One of the main reasons, for the suspension and removal of Scott Israel as Sheriff. was to make Broward County residents, and others in Florida, feel safe without any steps being taken to actually provide effective security to stop a mass school shooting. It is interesting that the BCSB main offices, the Broward County Commission main offices, all the Broward County courthouses and the Main offices of the BSO all have limited entry points and entry screening. But, nothing for the 271,000 students in the county. Gotta love the priorities of our elected politicians.

We're here. No we don't have all of the answers, nor do we think we do. But your statement, "... the ones who used a tragedy of a killer..." is quite a Freudian slip. Lord knows there's nothing that would make you happier than another catastrophe to enable you to say " I told you so. Now FIRE the current Sheriff." You're following a callous and bitter campaign straight down a rabbit hole. The outrage of DeSantis' political overreach is overshadowed by the well deserved guilt of voters, both democrat and republican who know that they failed in keeping local politicians in check which created a county tragedy. They also failed by not demanding school security and making it a priority. They didn't care enough. I assure you that aside from your hair splitting campaign explanations and claims of victim-hood, when the voter is holding that ballot, the last thing on their minds will be the jilted former Sheriff. The "disenfranchised" will have had their turkey, their police firings and the continuation of their diversion programs. The campaigns of some of the democratic presidential candidates who are presently tanking should give you some indication of where self proclaimed "victims" running for office end up. It won't be on the 5th floor of the PSB, and Donald Trump will win again in 2020.

^ How true that is. The extreme swings between helpless victim and spitting mad revolutionary have done nothing but suggest the possibility of mental illness to voter blocks that are necessary. The campaign, on every front, is sabotaging this candidate.
The 2016 loss momentum has dissipated, democrats have moved,on and looked elsewhere within their own party. The baby boomer females (who are the obvious advisers and planners) are stuck in their own old ideas and can't see past the end of their noses. There are only a few ways to turn the ship around and there's no indication that it's headed in that direction.

The white moderate vote is needed to win this. Osgood, Thurston and Mo are chipping away at this demographic every day and there's much buzz about them playing both ends. Would Thurston be caught sleeping during a hearing that involved the interests of D. Rolle? Where was the adrenaline if he's so passionate about the removal? He appears to be hedging his bets. Voters didn't miss that.

People continue to believe that the voters of Broward County actually know who and what the candidates are and care. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The vast majority of the voters care nothing about who the Sheriff is, unless his actions directly affect them. They will vote for whomever the media tells them to. School Board? Again, no one really cares. Even if a "reform" candidate is elected, there is more than enough inertia among the remaining board members to stymie any real reform. And, within a short time, the reform candidate is just another one of the boys handing out lucrative contracts for their own personal gain. No one in the Broward County Establishment is going to mess with the biggest cash cow in the county, the school system. The other elected posts are a a joke. Unless the local media exposes the incumbent's peccadilloes, reelection is simply a matter of being rubber stamped. The local establishment and the media control pplitics in this county, and theey always have.

Now, about the current sheriff's race. You really only have two viable candidates, Israel and Tony. The rest of the field are public nonentities. Republicans are largely superfluous in this county. Every Republican sheriff in Broward was a converted Democrat. And, The Republicans sunk their last sheriff, Nick Navarro, themselves.

Israel had a large base of support in Broward, as the incumbent. He was well supported by most of the people in his areas of responsibility. His support was undermined by the malicious and spurious charges against him, stemming out of the MSDHS incident. But, even the local media, Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald, supported his reinstatement, after his Senate hearing. As the truth about the MSDHS shooting comes out, Israel becomes a much more sympathetic figure. His success, or lack thereof, will depend upon what the local media does.

Tony has little incumbent advantage, in this race. His political strategy, so far, has been an attempt to pander to liberal progressive racial guilt. The agency is RACIST. There is not much he can do to "reform" the agency, because the vast majority of the voters did not see any real problems when Israel was in office. There was simply nothing to change. Just as Ron Cochran continued the programs of his predecessor, Nick Navarro, and implemented programs which Navarro had on the drawing board, Tony's stint as sheriff is largely the same, including giving away turkeys.

So, the Democrat primary will decide the sheriff's race. And, the most interesting thing about it, so far, is the lack of media attention being paid to it. We have less than four months to go and none of the major media outlets are leaning toward either candidate. And, make no mistake, the media, in South Florida, are largely controlled by the local Establishment, which is the Democrat Party. Which way will they jump?

Nope. The reason is this:

There's policy in place that did not exist pre-2018. The policy assures the public that police WILL go in. That is what is expected if there is to be another catastrophic event. Yes, we know that SI, with his back to the wall, changed the policy back to shall, but it didn't bring back the dead kids. Now, promise you this: If there is another major event and police stand outside to put a vest on while there are audible sounds of shots on the BC, or there is another deputy having a medical crisis that is not relieved by a Sergeant in a timely manner, there will be less confidence in leadership. The key box issue matters and needs to be addressed. But aren't you the same people who only talk about the OUTCOME of MSD, that only by the grace of God, cleared the deputies, and ignore the possibility of what still could've been happening inside of the building? So, which way do you want it ? Should be keep talking about what could have happened with regard to the incident with the key? If so, let's talk about what could have happened at MSD if Cruz had not fled the building and those shots out of the window of the teachers lounge were more lives being taken. Remember, no one outside of 1200 had that intel at the time. Still want to discuss hypocrisy?

Your wrong, CSPD did along with CSPD officer Butler who was the first leo on that campus. He was carrying a rifle. All the 911 phone calls were going to CSPD and he did not go in. How does that fit into your narrative. It didn’t fit in with the MSD Commission so they quickly skipped over it and dismissed it.

^audible shots on BC, a deputy is in a trunk putting on a vest. Shots being fired earlier, civilian teachers had already run in. Right wrong or indifferent, that is the visual image. You can't change that, and it will never be able to be explained away by logic. Nor will B. Miller's failure to communicate directly with SP directly during that 10 min. The mindset was created by the culture of the "public safety" promotion. Deep empathy for all on scene who did the very Parkland nothing that they were expected to do, but policy or no policy, that was not the way to approach that scene. Police run into danger and break policy all the time to save children in all kinds of scenarios. The explanations and rationales drive voters, who feel guilty themselves, to vote for the wishes of the families who lost their kids. If you don't believe it, drive north of Sunrise Blvd, or out of the Century Village parking lot and talk to people. Ask what's on their minds the most. It's the refusal to admit that mistakes were made. All of those deputies should be reinstated due to training failure and agency brainwashing-secondary to them having followed policy.

Just a few ignored facts, here.

11 people dead, 13 wounded, BEFORE, Peterson arrived at Bldg 12.

Miller, being thee ranking deputy on the scene, should have taken command and control. But, he arrived at the very end of the shooting and taking command would not have eliminated any casualties.

There is no evidence that any civilian teacher ran INTO bldg 12 during the shooting. One of teacher/security officers did enter the bldg, before Cruz had deployed his rifle and then turned around and went the other way upon seeing him. He ended up hiding in a closet.

Now, as to your contention that anyone would have been saved, if Peterson had run willy-nilly into the school, is flawed. He may have prevented the 10 casualties on the 3rd floor. But, the casualties on the first floor had already occurred, when he arrived at the scene. And, you seem to think that Peterson would have stopped Cruz, not become a casualty himself.

As for people wanting the BSO to do what they want them to do, this is BS. The vast majority of people have no training or experience in tactical response. Their knowledge in this area, comes from highly scripted TV shows and movies. The media pushed for a scapegoat. The parents of the slain children pushed for a scapegoat. And it was cheaper and easier to make that scapegoat the Sheriff than it was to take action against the people actually responsible for security at MSDHS, and every other school in the county, the BCSB. And, in the 18 months following the incident, there has been no significant increase in campus security in Broward County. the same security exists in Broward County schools today, which existed at MSDHS on the day of the shooting. And there is NO public out cry by the public for any changes.

Every paragraph above has at least one lie. Can you spot them? There's a bonus if you can find the boldest lie. Hint: Hixon.
Spin works on some, but not the majority.

Well, Chuckles, let's see if YOU can point them out. I love it when people claim something is a lie or inaccurate and then fail to actually support THEIR claim. Put up or shut up.

About Hixon and Feis. Feis entered the bldg in response to the report from a student that Cruz was in the building before the shooting started. Whether Hixon entered during the shooting or before is in doubt. He was in the first floor hallway during the shooting. Both lost their lives during the shooting. Were they heroes or simply sacrificial lambs? I love how people admire an unarmed person for running at a man shooting a rifle. Heroism or stupidity?
