A question from one community deeply affected by community policing:
Obviously, based on the posts over the last 24 hours, those in defense of this administration are tuned in.
With regard to your proposal of the Threat Assessment team, exactly what are your plans to address the criminal element left behind, since 2013, still roaming the hallways of Broward County Public Schools? Specifically, those in which the SRO's, and at times, road deputies were under the "command" of school principals who managed reports and determined that even felonies would be dealt with 'in house."
There's a whole lot of planning about going forward, but the experience at MSD proves that PAST incidents are a threat as well. The "starting point" of your plans does absolutely nothing to promote safety. Students will not use the "say something" app. Kids don't do that.
There are juvenile criminals all over the schools, some still in attendance, others lingering in the community. Aside from the fact that students have been in daily harms way for years, it is applauding that the deputies in our community were also set up to be cut off at the knees; not only in performing their job of law enforcement, but also in danger of being shot themselves. Let's remember that Cruz could have chosen any target in the community, and could have unleashed his rage and ambushed law enforcement as they responded; or on any other day, at any other time.
Forming a new coalition, task force, committee, etc. is useless, if day one, is today. The absolute refusal to admit that the cooperation with BCPS in dismissing juvenile crime was a mistake, PROMISE as a misleading sham, that SRO's were intentionally kept out of school matters, and the continued alliance of the Sheriff with Runcie, a proven liar makes this proposal questionable.
Every day that past performance is without honest reflection and past leadership is touted as "amazing" is one day closer to the end of the administrations of BSO and BCPS. In short, we are not buying the cute little apps, the free giveaways or any of this nonsense. The victims of school crime are real. You have dismissed them; and continue to do so.
