Do a little fact checking and you'll see he belonged to a faction of the "Nation of Islam" that preached hatred and violence towards whites. He's held in such high regard when his only attribute was being a great boxer. That's it. Nothing else. He can't preach hate and be held as the great uniter. I have never been able to understand why Americans of African ancestry, join the 'nation of islam!' Since before 636 AD, when islam solidified, Islamic potentates have practiced slavery, with most of their slaves coming from inner Africa territories and tribes. If I were an African American I would embrace any religion but islam, and if I truly wanted to return to my 'roots,' I would practice 'Palo Mayombe' and change my name to one of 'Bantu' origins.
