Manatee deputies were informed that Charles Wells may be in the county to purchase heroin. Using a description of the vehicle and a location provided in the tip, a deputy located the vehicle.
The MSO deputy began to follow Wells who quickly sped up and began to drive recklessly at more than 80 mph, “running off the shoulder several times.” The deputy turned on lights and sirens and chased Wells vehicle for about a 1/2-mile, but turned them off when he saw oncoming traffic. The deputy was about to turn around to convince Wells to stop his reckless fleeing, but Wells turned onto a dead end street, stopped his vehicle and put his hands out the driver-side window.
Wells told the deputy he did not see his [red and blue] lights and [did not hear] sirens and was not trying to get away from officer. Wells told the deputy, “He usually drives 100 mph down this roadway all the time just for fun.” A police K-9 made a positive drug alert. Wells said the glass pipe in his vehicle was used to smoke marijuana. Baggies and a digital scale were also found.A search of the roadway turned up several small baggies that may contain heroin and marijuana tossed from the vehicle before the traffic stop. The items were put into evidence and will be checked for DNA and fingerprints. Charlie Wells was arrested and charged with fleeing an officer and possession, use or delivery of drugs.
He is the grandson of former Sheriff Charlie Wells and is the son of Chief Deputy Rick Wells, who recently filed papers to run for Manatee County sheriff.
