How do Deputies afford to live in the Keys?

Serious question, not looking to stir the pot. I was recently looking at applying for a Deputy spot, but was turned away once I was what the cost of living was. It seems like unless you're originally from the Keys and already have a place there, or married to a professional making good money, you simply can't afford to live a decent life down there. Do most Deputies live in Dade and commute? Even those who work in the Lower Keys? What kind of nightmare commute is that?
