The Sarasota County commissioners budget includes shortfalls in 2016 and 2017, with a $10 million shortfall in 2017. During the past few years, crime has also dropped dramatically. However, Sheriff Tom Knight is now asking for another $800,000 to hire deputies to patrol east of Interstate 75 and around the mall near University Parkway. Knight said that area could be hard to patrol after a diverging diamond is built to ease traffic.
Knight said, “I don't know how much longer we can control traffic.”
