Sarasota County approved zoning for AltMed (http://www.altmed.co/) to build a medical marijuana growing facility on a farm and nursery 8 miles east of Interstate 75. A 20-acre portion of land is zoned as "Open Use Estates-1" and it will be a heavily-guarded, 25,000-square-foot indoor grow facility. The location is ideal because it won't break any state laws, such as growing near a school.
AltMed plans to become a major player in the cannabis industry with plans to cultivate, process and dispense medical marijuana on-site at the growing location, based on the restrictions set forth in the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014, legalized by Gov. Rick Scott earlier this year.
