View Full Version : Double time for Holidays?

A recent article over the weekend highlighted the shortfalls of the jail. One of the problems found was the compensation for which leave was given for holidays worked. As quoted, "When the jail was under the direction of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, jailers who worked holidays were paid with comp time. That meant that a jailer who worked 10 hours on Christmas Day, instead of being paid double time, would have been paid for 10 hours of labor and granted an additional 15 hours of paid leave. The problem with this strategy, according to Lovoy, is that it tended to exacerbate staffing shortages at the jail when workers claimed their comp time. County officials hope to alleviate this problem by paying employees for holidays worked, rather than awarding comp time."
So if the county can pay jailers double time for holidays, why can't the Sheriff's Office pay deputies? Come on, pay double time for holidays worked and open up some overtime. Do something to improve morale, give us some extra pay in our pockets and in turn, it will put more people in jail. We don't make $70,000 per year and every little bit helps.

Where have been??? The Sheriff requested this in his last budget and the BOCC turned him down!!! You should have been at the BOCC meetings supporting the Sheriff!!! The PBA should have been there too!!! Pay attention next time and support your Sheriff!!!

United we stand, divided we fall! We Deputies at the ECSO are clearly divided. We must become united with a single voice and clear goals. We must all support these goals (Even if we don't like and or agree with them) if we ever want to catch up to the Corrections Officers in pay and benefits!!!

No this is not David Craig, but it is a 25+ year ECSO Deputy!

The BCC chose not to fund the Sheriff's request to pay employees
for earned Holiday Time and Comp Time. But as soon as the BCC
took over the jail, ALL earned Holiday Time is being paid the
following pay cycle. nAny COMP Time earned for working O/T or
attending training gets paid the next pay cycle. It's one of the first
times I didnt mind going to training session on my day off.

I found it odd that the BCC rejected the Sheriff's proposal to increase
funds to pay for accrued Holiday and Comp leave, but the BCC was able
to find the $$$$ to do it for jail employees.

If you live in District 2 you might want to remember come election time
that Commissioner Valentino needs to be replaced.

I'm all about getting a raise and supporting the sheriff but not when this sheriff and chief attend the meetings with egos bigger than the room and make unbelievable demands. The BOCC didn't give the sheriff the money he wanted because he tried to strong arm them and that pissed them off. They saw how the jail employees were being treated and now have the ability to compensate them.
Good for the jail employees

Amen! There is money in the budget to pay overtime, the Chief just elects to be selective about who gets it. Besides with the new use it or lose it policy that EH instituted there is no need to pay anyone overtime. He is all about paying himself and doing what benefits him.

A worthless do-boy. The Sheriff also said it would take an additional $6+ million dollars to run the jail and that was a lie. You keep swallowing boy, it won't help you on the Sgt's exam list.
