View Full Version : manning

I know this is a topic on everyones mind lately: When is the commission going to realize we need more officers? There are currently 5-6 non-rank officers out for a variety of reasons for an unknown amount of time and that is part of it, but come on, when are we going to hire more than just hiring one by one as people retire? Minimum manning is five during the day--the same it was 20 years ago. The city hasn't grown since then?! We are going from call to call during most days and there is no relief in sight as far as new hires. The chief got turned down AGAIN for 4 more officers. This is unbelievable. The money is there.

I agree, maybe when people start quitting and going elsewhere they will wake up. Our PBA should go directly to the Commission with this. The City Manager obviously doesn't care.

08-24-2012, 06:09 PM
It is about time this forum addressed a real issue. The commissioners and the city manager are completely responsible for the lack of cops.

When are they going to hire more cops? Is it going to take one of us getting killed?

08-24-2012, 06:12 PM
The next election for commissioner is soon. When the PBA rep asks you to man the polls or walk to pass out flyers tell him to go>>>>>>>>>>>>

No Cops NO VOTES!!!!!!!!!!!!

VOTE for the other person, maybe they get it.

What can we do to show the commissioners we need more officers? Seriously, what can we do as a membership to let our commissioners know how we feel? Something definitely needs to be done. This department needs help. WE need help!! Hey reps, what do you say??

08-25-2012, 11:45 PM
Reps what are you doing about it, oh wait supporting you own agendas sorry frgot we are just peeons.

There is no need to bash our reps. If I understand it correctly, they already had a meeting with admin to discuss the manning issues. What more can be done? It's not like our department has a bunch of beefed up specialty units and the road is being short staffed on purpose. There's no where or no one to choose from to help out the road. Its the commission. No one else. We need to hire more. Plain and simple.

Reps do your job and get the manager to hire more cops!!!

08-27-2012, 11:56 PM
speciality units not beefed up? CID is at max, SCU just got one with 2 more selected, Traffic is at max, CIU is at max. They are robbing from the back bone of the department to supplement speciality units while we run from call to call with minium manning on OT. Feisty wake up and smell the sauerkraut

C'mon man...this is Coconut Creek. We could run with one per shift and the City knows it.

But yet we have a Chief, D/C Legal Advisor, and a bunch of daytime warriors. Hmmmmmmmmm.

The traffic unit is down 1 person from 2 years ago

We are down 2 bike unit officers

Down 1 SRO

All have gone to patrol except Pete went to SCU and with Pete added to SCU they now are still 1 down from what they had 3 years ago

The chief has asked for 4 Officers every year since he got here

Only the Commissioners can authorize new Officers in the budget

Oh,and the legal advisor got Avello's position so no loss there.

We are only hurting because we have 5 officers out in patrol

keep drinking the cool aid
no other police dept steals from patrol to beef up specialty units when they are so short handed. We are running with less then minium requirements on patrol causing OT but still putting people in specialty units. That is a straight fact How about abolishing some of the high and mighty speciality units to increase cops on patrol so some of us can take a day off or go on vacation. How about officer safety? Does anybody care? Does the PBA care?

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH

Please show proof of these "straight facts". As written above, traffic is short, street crimes is short and the sros are short. It's not the departments fault or our reps. It's the commission. Plain and simple.

they should be short and they should be temp or permanently shut down until the commission hires more cops...................stupid is as stupid does

proof? WTF?

Wow, you really are a moron. No one is disputing the fact the road is short but the other units are not beefed up as other people have claimed above. The department as a whole is short. To suggest that all other units be shut down is an ignorant statement. There's just not enough officers to go around.

08-31-2012, 06:08 PM
I see you got your management skills from a cracker jack box

09-01-2012, 10:31 AM
specialty units are a luxury not a necessity. road patrol is a necessity J Edgar. Stop trying to keep your cushy job, Patrol needs help.

09-03-2012, 06:33 PM
The commission and city manager need to hire cops before someone gets hurt or killed. If the citizens knew we had only 5 cops on they would shit. 5 cops on one on his lunch two in court wow two left.

****ingggggg insanity

09-04-2012, 08:17 PM
We have 4 PBA reps; 4! Go put the pressure on them to help. Isn't that what dues are for? RS is going to be the next PBA president....shouldn't that help.......
(2 Patrol, 1 Sergeant, 1 RS)

Why is a sergeant sitting behind a desk making 100k

Perhaps the 'angels' can help..........

This is still a team effort but the chief makes the final call, and the chief when he came in had to decide how do I get this accomplished? I gave him pretty much free reign on how does he get this accomplished. So, he brought in some people that are part of his history, the deputy chief, and a few others. They are to be considered our angels, our confidants, our support team.

Did anybody hear that the Chief got 1 additional cop by giving up a records position? Or is that a rumor...the bottom line is we still have 6 cops out for a variety of reasons. That is just about 10% of the grunt workforce, most will eventually come back to work. I agree we could use a few more cops but what's going on now is temporary. At least they made some adjustments to the teams to even out the manpower.

you're probably starting that as a 'rumor', as you can't replace a lower-paid, civilian job with a higher-paid, more benefit, non-lateral job position.

Patrol is very short, we are on OT to meet minimum staffing almost every day.
Speacialized units are a luxury not a necessity.
Elected officials like the bike patrol, community involvement unit, traffic, the SET team and whatever else gets them votes. Put them back in patrol and let the politicians not see them anymore, and watch what happens. But you have to have chutzpa to do that.

Does anybody really think the Commission knows what is happening to this Department?

It's probably more than a guess that they don't, or are being told something completely different than the reality of day-to-day operations here.

We need help

WE DO NEED HELP ITS CALLED MONEY FOR JOBS COPS!!!!

You are an idiot and are ignorant. There is a need to tell the truth, you just may not like how it sounds or have your own agenda. Sgts were promoted with no 'official' spots open, SET positions filled, off the road, officer in Elementary schools, moeny for new CSA's, not Officers, instead of BOTH bikes going to road, -shocker-, PL goes in, BM goes to road.... Management can do more, they are just not. It's not that difficult, it's about #1 Officer safety, #2 service to community. Unless you are busy paying back certain ........and got backed-up in staffing because of that.

Casino is done, hotel going up, crime up, Promenade flourishing, WalMart, and more, but we have the same manning from 15 years ago.........
Seriously

We are getting two new officers in the new budget year: one to replace sgt js and one from the vacant civilian slot opened when rr quit. Certified and/or non certified is the question. Obviously, certified would be faster. We will see. Its a start at least.

09-15-2012, 01:00 AM
Are you guys sure we are getting two more ??? this doesn't look to good. looks like they turned down the 4 we were asking for and gave us 2 CSA and 3 part-time SRO.
