So much for civil service rules and regs. Guess it doesn't matter anymore. Now anyone can be chief.

What do you mean? What civil service requirements to be Chief? What should we do advertise and anyone who wants to be a Chief of Police can apply? Maybe it's time that people keep their focus on the right track, which should be the betterment of the department and stop worrying about their personal agendas. I'm tired of all these idiots running around beating a war drum because of their affiliations with former administrators and elected officials of this city. It's time that we start looking at what's best for this department as a whole and not what's best for just a group of two or three people.

Whether an insider or external candidate, your new police chief should be a person the mayor has confidence in and feels comfortable with, period. Doubtless, Hialeah is a burgeoning city, with great potential yet to be tapped; after all it is Miami-Dade County’s “second city!” Whoever the mayor appoints, should be a person that brings to the office of the chief, policing experience earned during service on the streets, investigations and command assignments. Moreover, that person should have the managerial acumen to manage the department’s budget; particularly in the current austere fiscal climate. Finally, the prospective police chief must have a vision based on a sound formal education and understanding of cutting edge policing theories and practices. Should that candidate bring to the post a basic knowledge of the city, its history and the idiosyncrasies of its constituents . . . that's a plus! Yet, of all qualities, none is most important than leadership. Whoever the mayor selects must be a person that leads by example and is an objective leader. We hope Mayor Carlos Hernandez chooses wisely.
