View Full Version : Sarasota union leaders concede on pensions

"Offering sweeping concessions to city employee contracts, union officials are bracing for blows to public employee pensions like those felt in the private sector years ago.

The local Teamsters Union has struck a tentative deal with Sarasota that would shift the risk of pension investments on newer employees and stem the runaway costs of its promise to future retirees."

If the TEAMSTERS are caving in on this, the PBA wont be too far behind.

As workers unions everywhere grapple with local and state governments determined to slash expensive public employee pensions, the group representing city staff here has all but folded.

The tentative employee contract between the local Teamsters union and Sarasota includes a surprising series of concessions on retiree benefits, which translate to significant pay cuts for its 240 members, and another 150 nonunion workers.

The strategy starkly contrasts with union goals elsewhere, experts say, and could pressure other unions to acquiesce early.

"If it's happening here, maybe it will change what's happening at the table over here," said Dr. Cynthia Cohen, a professor emeritus at University of Florida's Department of Management.

"All of these elements between cities and unions will become the frame for cities nearby," she added.
