Suspect in attempted deputy shooting in West Palm Beach charged
A 22-year-old West Palm Beach man was arrested and charged tonight with the attempted shooting of two Palm Beach Palm Beach Sheriff's Office detectives on Thursday.
Michael Patterson was charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm, a sheriff's office news release stated. Patterson was one of four men arrested, but the only one connected to Thursday's shooting, spokeswoman Teri Barbera said. The other men were arrested on unrelated warrants.
However, Patterson was not the shooter, according to the probable cause affidavit. He was driving the Lincoln that followed the detectives unmarked vehicle and maneuvered it so that the passenger had the opportunity to shoot at the detectives for a position of cover, the affidavit says.
Once Patterson was identified as a suspect, sheriff's deputies and members of the U.S. Marshal's Service Florida Regional Task Force saw him coming out of an apartment in Tiffany Lakes and get in a Mitsubishi Gallant with three other men.
Deputies tried to stop the car and the men fled, but stopped abruptly in the middle of 45th Street, the release stated. They bailed out of the vehicle and ran, but were caught.
The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to search for the shooter.
