Designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, the roof leaks after a rainstorm.

An audit showing major construction mistakes in the new $46 million Sarasota Police Department could put taxpayers on the hook for correcting more than $1 million in design flaws.

Here we go. Let the finger pointing and blame game begin. It is obvious that there were MAJOR design issues wrong with the building a long time ago. Small lockers, unsafe prisoner holding cells???? No matter what you want to say about the architect or contractor, higher ups at the city or police department had to agree to and sign off on the plans. The design stinks, but it should have been caught and rectified a long time ago. Thankfully the job fell to sgt. forth who spotted most of these problems and was able to get them fixed.

Exactly which corner of the new building should the sheriff place his office?

Well, thank the lord there are 2 showers for all of patrol, and one shower for each captain. At least the gym is nice.

workers are replacing police lockers that were originally sized for grade-schoolers. Panic buttons are exposed in cells designed to hold arrestees. The air conditioning system on the roof is so loud it breaks the city's noise ordinance, according to the audit.

Nice!

City audit criticizes project oversight
By Jack Gurney | Jan. 12, 2011
An internal Sarasota city audit conducted by the clerk's office raises concerns about possible fraud and procedural violations traceable in part to both the quality and timeliness of administrative oversight on the new $46.3-million police headquarters building project.
On Dec. 30, City Auditor and Clerk Pamela Nadalini released the detailed report authored by Senior Internal Auditor Heather Riti.

"Mayor [Kelly] Kirschner expressed some concerns, but it was already on our radar screen," she said. "The staff's presentation was alarming. Red lights were flashing. This was one of the largest projects ever taken on by the city, and it warranted checks and balances."
Police Capt. Gerald Lacertosa provided supervision and input during the pre-construction design phase. Then he retired. Nadalini confirmed, "The audit is not a negative reflection on the police department." WHY NOT?

Finance Director Chris Lyons, Police Chief Mikel Hollaway and Public Works Director Doug Jeffcoat insisted, "The report should state that the audit was conducted at the request of a commissioner (Mayor Kirschner)," and "the timing of this audit was premature."
