Deputy accused of breaking teen's teeth

ORMOND BEACH -- A Volusia County sheriff's deputy is being investigated by the State Attorney's Office following complaints that a teenager was beaten for throwing eggs at a pickup parked at the deputy's home.

State Attorney's Office spokesman Chris Kelly confirmed his office is investigating a complaint against Deputy Anthony Zimmerer and "should have more clarification by the end of the week."

No charges have been filed against Zimmerer and the suspect is listed as "unknown" in reports.

According to an Ormond Beach police report, Zimmerer was celebrating his birthday Aug. 13 with a party at his home on Clydesdale Drive when 16-year-old Timothy Conroy and three friends drove by and threw a handful of eggs at a white pickup parked near Zimmerer's house.

Before the teens could drive off, a very tall, bald man jumped in front of their car and a second man, described as tan and muscular with very short hair, demanded the boys get out and wash the truck, the report states.

Conroy told the man he would give him money to have the car washed, the report states.

The teen told investigators the man said, "You know what? You're p - - - - - g me off," before throwing beer in his face.

The suspect then punched the teen in the face "several times" and didn't stop after the boy fell to the ground but punched him in the back of the head instead, the report states. Investigators took photographs of the teen's injuries, including chipped teeth and a cut lower lip.

Karen Conroy, the teen's mother, said her son suffered extensive injuries to his teeth.

"My son's big front tooth is chipped and two bottom teeth are shattered," she said by phone Tuesday. "They (dentist) tried to do cosmetic bonding, but it isn't holding."

She said her son now needs a crown and a plate to fix his teeth properly.

According to the report, several off-duty police officers were at the party for Zimmerer but said they didn't see anything. One officer said she was just arriving and saw a car "exiting the subdivision (Oak Forest) at a high rate of speed," according to the report.

One of the off-duty officers, Amanda Kasper, later realized it was her truck that had been pelted with eggs. She called an on-duty officer and asked her to contact the boy's father about the vandalism.

That same officer was later dispatched to Karen Conroy's home regarding an assault and battery complaint on Clydesdale Drive. But the officer asked for someone else to take the incident report because it "was a conflict to investigate," the report states.

Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said there is no internal-affairs investigation involving Zimmerer.

"We are waiting for the criminal process to be completed," he said. "Once that occurs, we have every intention of conducting an internal investigation into the incident."

Zimmerer, a reservist, has been put on notice by the U.S. Army that he will be deployed sometime in the near future, Davidson said.

"However, we have not been presented with a written order and, therefore, don't know at this time when the deployment will occur," he said.

Way to second guess. He is being punished. And think if it was your vehicle. But to address the word in the title (elite). Accountability is something that elite units (like the Marines and the VCSO) practice. You designated responsibility...not accountability. The individual is being held accountable. Go VCSO!!!!
