An off-duty police officer shot two assailants early Monday morning after they accosted him at a cash machine in Hialeah Gardens, police said.
The unnamed Miami-Dade officer was withdrawing money from the ATM shortly after 2 a.m. outside Palmetto Liquors at 8016 NW 103rd St., when he said three men pulled up in a Ford pick-up truck, blocking the officer's car.
The men attacked the officer, who pulled out his gun and shot two of them, Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Rebecca Perez said.
Both are listed in stable condition at area hospitals, though police did not release their names. No injuries were reported for the officer.
Antonio Guzman, owner of Palmetto Liquors, said the officer's Silverado Chevrolet was still parked next to the ATM early Monday morning. Guzman said the strip mall that houses his store has always seemed safe, given the Hialeah Gardens police station sits about a block away.
``I've been here for nine years and never had something happen,'' he said.
