The Florida Senate wants to PRIVATIZE YOUR JOB!
Yesterday, the powerful Senate Ways and Means Committee voted to
CLOSE THREE PUBLIC PRISONS, transfer the inmates to a
Private Prison (Blackwater River Correctional Institution) in Santa
Rosa County, and PRIVATIZE AN EXISTING PUBLIC PRISON.
The result is 640 state correctional officers will be without a job.
We have no idea which prisons are slated for closure or privatization, so
that means everyone’s job is in jeopardy. This act is one of the most
aggressive actions against Correctional Officers taken by the
Legislature in over a decade.
This amendment was filed yesterday, which gave the Florida PBA very
little time to react. State Correctional Officers President Jim
Baiardi publicly opposed the amendment during the committee
meeting calling it a Bailout for the Private Prison Industry.
The vote to stop it was close, but the amendment received just enough votes to pass.
Now we have to do our best to kill it on the Floor of the Florida Senate
next Wednesday or Thursday.
Contact the Senators and ask them to support the PBA
amendment removing the privatization language from
Senate Bill 2700!
