View Full Version : 45,000 Hatians to become Floridians

01-16-2010, 04:17 AM
ORLANDO -- Thousands of Haitian earthquake survivors could soon be calling Florida home.

The American Red Cross says there is a plan to bring as many as 45,000 evacuees from Haiti to Florida.

However, Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty says he has some concerns with the plan. When the Haitians arrive, the county, the city and possibly other area communities will have to scramble to figure out where to put the earthquake victims, and it will be a tough challenge.

As the United States plans its strategy to help Haiti, the state closest to the island nation is taking center stage with a plan to bring tens of thousands of refugees to Florida and approximately 4,000 to Orlando. What that influx of people brings with it is a very large service demand, particularly in the area of social services in what is already a tough economy.

"We're very stressed financially right now, and this is going to add to that stress," Mayor Crotty said. "So this is a balance we're going to have to work on strengthening."

Mayor Crotty says the plan is vague at this point, but citizens should get used to the idea of helping by opening our arms to both U.S. citizens who had been living in Haiti, as well as non-U.S. citizens.

"It would occur to me that there is a legal process associated with that and it would probably have to come through the State Department in terms of citizenship and visas, work visas [and] that sort of thing," said Mayor Crotty.

The plan would bring around 45,000 refugees through Jacksonville to be divided and distributed to Florida urban areas, including Tampa, Miami and Orlando. At this point, it is not clear yet what other Florida cities might host earthquake victims. The only certainty is that it will likely happen quickly and require a team effort.

Well, there goes any chance of a pay raise for the next 20 years. Any money the state can free up will go to pay for programs and infrastructure to support this mass influx of immigrants. New schools must be built and the medicare system will need an infusion of funds to care for their medical needs. If you work for the State of Florida, this might be the writing on the wall to start looking at moving to another state that isn't bogged down with entitlement costs.

I am sure that our friends and allies in Cuba, Mexico, DR, Brazil, and Hugo Chavez can be counted upon to accept thousands of these poor victims from Haiti. Those loving nations that are close geographically to Haiti will undoubtedly provide extensive aid in rebuilding the infrastructure in Haiti. I expect to be inviting all of the leaders of these Central and South American nations to the White House for a beer in the next few days to work out the details of aid from those nations to Haiti.

There is really no need for the U.S. to accept any immigrants from Haiti without EXTENSIVE background checking to be sure we are not importing the escaped criminals from the jails of Haiti--remember how Fidel cleaned out his "unwanted!" Humanitarian aid is appropriate from the U.S.; stupidity in "opening our doors" is irrational.

Remember the "change" that I promised. It is here, NOW! Lower standards of living, higher taxes, less freedom, higher deficits, higher national debt, few employed, more unemployed, more government, less available health care, and less openness in national government.

Dude we aren't getting a raise with or without any immigrants. The only raise we are getting is the ever present middle finger from Tally. And I'm sure the CDC is going to be on top of immunizing or checking for diseases with all of the immigrants , if there are any. Resources are stretched too thin here as it. We already have enough illegals here that need to be hauled off.

The rest of the nation views Florida as their personal garbage can to dump all their criminals, illegal trespassers from foreign countries, & other societal throw-aways. Florida politicians welcome them with open arms. "Come on in - we've got plenty of room. If you can't pay your way, we'll give you everything for free and force everybody else to pay for it."

This is exactly why I left the state of Florida. :|

Just what the overpopulated, financially broke state needed huh? Another "turd" world country dumping 45,000 of its finest on your shores. Have fun!

Haiti is one of the least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere, and it experiences a high level of civil and political unrest. Supplies of goods and services are adequate in Port-au-Prince, the capital, but there are shortages in other parts of the country. Most products are imported and are expensive. While tourism facilities in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and Cap Haitien are satisfactory, they are rudimentary at best in most other Haitian cities, and they are virtually non-existent elsewhere in Haiti.

SAFETY AND SECURITY: Haiti continues to experience civil and political unrest. Protests and demonstrations, which can turn violent at any time, day or night, occur periodically throughout the country. Private organizations and businesses may be targets of demonstrations or take-over attempts related to business disputes or extortion demands. Rural areas have become more dangerous.

CRIME: There are no "safe areas" in Haiti. Crime, already a problem, is growing. The state of law and order is of increasing concern, with reports of armed robberies and break-ins, kidnappings, murders and car hijackings becoming more frequent. The police are poorly equipped and unable to respond quickly to calls for assistance.

Travellers should be particularly alert when leaving the Port-au-Prince airport, as criminals have often targeted arriving passengers for later assaults and robberies. Criminals also watch bank customers and subsequently attack them, and some recent incidents have resulted in the victims' deaths.

Haiti has the highest per capita tuberculosis (TB) burden in the Latin America and Caribbean region. After HIV/AIDS, TB is the country’s greatest infectious cause of mortality in both youth and adults (6,814 deaths in 2007). Haiti is among the eight priority countries identified by the Pan American Health Organization for TB control in the region. According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) 2009 Global Tuberculosis Control Report, Haiti had and estimated 29,333 new TB cases in 2007. Of these, 53 percent were new pulmonary sputum smear-positive (SS+) cases.

Will the last AMERICAN to leave Florida please take the AMERICAN FLAG!

Typical politics. Why are we, America, the first to help every other country in the world but we do nothing for our own people? It sure would be nice if the "relief supplies", that have no doubt been sitting a warehouse somewhere, were distributed to AMERICANS IN AMERICA!!!!!!

They're bringing them to Florida so they can feel at home. Florida pays 3rd world starvation wages, so it'll be like they never left their homeland.
