Yes we lost the guards but Brothers and Sisters DON’T FORGET those were station details that were staff around the clock by on duty Sworn Officers (Back gate, auto pound, prisoner processing, wagon and front desk details).

what was the point of security guards anyway???i think the light duty officers should work the back gate, metal detector, etc...

The guards were excellent assets to all of us (sworn officers as well as the psa’s). But with the budget cuts their security contract was not renewed and the guard positions were eliminated!

Weren't the Security Guards put in when Mayor Suarez showed up at City Hall and the officer did not recognize him and asked him for identification?? We went ballistic and yanked the MPD off the job and hired an outside security firm for the front door. Anyone else remember?

Something like that. One of the fathead commissioners showed up at the central station and was asked for id by a rookie officer who was working the screening desk. The comm. became offended and started the movement to replace the officers with a "professional" security guard.

Let's get the story straight! Shortly after 9/11 officers were working the front door at the MRC on an overtime basis. The instructions were to ask all visitors to the MRC for ID and log them in. The exception was city employees with proper city ID. One day then commissioner Tomas Regalado came into the MRC and was asked for ID by the officer working the desk. Tomasito was plenty pissed that he wasn't recognized as a commissioner of this fine city. I think the officer was just being difficult. Well pictures of the commissioners were posted to avoid this happening again; however shortly after the incident the OT detail was 07'd and sworn police officers carrying city issued guns were replaced with unarmed unprofessional security guards. I know because I used to work that detail it was 11 hours of OT every week, and it came in handy.

Tomasito is now the mayor, the officer involved now works in the DC's office, and this post will probably be deleted by the MOD.

It was at MRC,after 911.We had a 24 hr security detail in the lobby that required "ALL" employees to show their city id to gain entry into the building. There was a 7' tall sign right by the door stating the id requirements, and that employees without id's would have their supervisors come down to the front desk to escort them to their office, also bags and purses were searched.
It was Ofc.Blanco (now a Sgt in training)that requested the id from one of the commissioners i forgot which one now,and pointed out the 7' sign with the id requirement,of course the EGO took over the brain? and he demanded to be allowed to proceed without showing id because he claimed that EVERYBODY should know who HE WAS!!.The powers that be went to plan B no more police officers (they have authority to make arrest) and hired security guards. Also they placed photographs of all commissioners at the lobby in MRC and Central Station.God bless you Sandy for standing your ground.

Boy, you recently demoted lts. Really are grasping at straws.

There are two alternatives here, either the PSA works the gate or I work the gate.
I, for one would rather have a PSA working the gate than me.

So, what's the beef?

I'm sure if they had decided on sworn PO's working the Gate, you would be complaint about that, Lieutenant.
