The Fort Myers Police Department has opened an investigation into whether one of its officers violated state election laws by sitting in uniform at a desk where a sign was taped voicing opposition to the elected police review board ordinance.
According to Anthony Thomas, a main supporter of the elected review board, said the officer was also passing out fliers in opposition to Ordinance #3522.
Chief Doug Baker said the department has opened an investigation to determine whether any laws have been violated, and if so by whom. The officer, Christian Reynolds, was at the city utilities building working a regular detail, and it’s not clear how long the signs had been up or if he was an active participant.
Baker said officials will review the surveillance tape.
Thomas said he plans to file a complaint with state officials in Tallahassee.
Baker said if it is determined a law was broken, the case will be forwarded to the state attorney’s office.
